I've got component video cables and digital audio cable connecting my DVD player to my AV receiver. I tested the system about 3 weeks ago and I had video and audio.

Just recently, I have lost my DVD video on the tv, but the audio is still coming through. I didn't "fiddle" with anything during that timeframe that would lead me to believe that I changed a setting or something.

My question is...do component video cables have a short lifespan and can they go bad rather quickly?

FYI, I haven't looked into the situation any farther than this I just thought I'd throw the question out there, thanks.

Great receiver you have there.

In short, the component cables should not have a limited life span. There is no signal that passes through the cable that can degrade it over time, like for example an ignition wire. Sounds like something must have come loose.

My guess is there is something loose or somehow your setup changed. The component cables should never go bad, normally if a component cable is loose you will lose certain colors, I've never heard of them going bad. Make sure all your component cables are tight, if that doesn't resolve the problem check your setup.

Can you hook the DVD player up to another TV or in another way? Maybe it died.

If you have a multimeter, you should measure the resistance of each cable end to end. That is measure the center conductor end to end and then the shield end to end to insure that you don't have a high resistance or an open connecetion.

Another quick test is, since the audio is coming through, to connect the suspected video cables in place of the audio cable, one by one.

If the audio disappears, you will know which video cable to blame. If the audio stays then it's something else.
