Yesterday I received a job offer out of the blue. I really don't want to get into what I do for a living, since I don't want to be laughed at, but the job I have been offered is the same type of position, the starting pay is comparable to what I'm making now, but the benefits are better. I was recently able to convince the people in charge at my present position to hire my 19 year old son. He is not the son commonly kwown as blown302. He had been unemployed for over a year and was very unhappy with this situation. He seems to like his new job. If I take this other position, I'm not certain he will be able to retain his position. I'm concerned what this might do to him, emotionally. For this reason, I am considering turning this offer down. What's a body to do???AARRGG!

Bruce, over the years, there have been MANY other reasons to laugh at you, so don't worry about the job description thing - those llamas can't clean up after themselves .
Have you considered the variables? Pension impacts, benefits vs. time invested with one company. Will this impact your son at all, or are you guessing. Working conditions. Viability of the company. Etc.

No, he just tells people he cleans up after llamas, sells crack to kids, and sells his body to lonely sailors... after all, the lie is easier than telling people he works in IT. *snicker*

I'd say (God help me) Ray is right again. You ought to consider the LONG TERM impacts of the decision on both you and your son. He certainly has more time to fix his long-term employment situation than you do, benefits are expensive and difficult to obtain, and the whole "life long compensation" thing should not be underestimated (defined benefit plans, 401k matching, longevity bonuses, etc.). My answer to everything is build a spreadsheet

Ray,
Thanks bud for reminding me about all those behind the door snickers.
Bren, I promise to leave the llamas and the sailors alone from now on. Those llamas leave you alone, in the dark, feeling used.
As far as the crack goes, in case the someone from the NSA is reading this, I can only say DENY, DENY, DENY.

Ken,
That's a good question, I just don't know the answer for sure. I do know there have been some pretty good people suddenly dismissed, at least I thought they were good people. That has given me some cause for concern.

Are you a hydraulic engineer? I had a friend in high school who told me his dad was a hydraulic engineer. Turns out he really drove a forklift in a warehouse, so I guess it was technically true.

I guess it's my fault for opening this can. It's feeding time.
