Yeah, I know, they are less preferred than wall mounts due to the way that the ear interprets sound better when it is coming from the side than overhead. That said, in my basement project, one room will have in-ceiling speakers. Between cabinets, doors, etc, that's how it worked out.

Anybody have any experience with ceiling speakers in the under-$500/pair range? The main ones I'm looking at so far are Klipsch. If the sound warrants it, I could stretch the budget a bit.

This room is a "second zone" and is adjacent to the HT. It is about 14 x 14 x 8. Most of the use will probably be during workouts, provided I still remember how to use my Bowflex.

A third zone will be a tiny office that I'm thinking is ripe for some architectural Axioms...

Doc, do they have to be "in-ceiling" or might "on-ceiling" be acceptable and allow the use of QSs. For example, Randy Porter(sirquack)has a very neat ceiling mounting. Also note that the Axiom newsletter that came out this afternoon features the new ceiling mounts for the QSs.

Wow - that was fast. Somebody else is up late, I see.

Nah, QS series speakers would overwhelm the room. I wonder if the architectural Axioms have ever been ceiling mounted? My ceiling is sheetrock over 2x6 studs, not too different than the average wall's 2x4 studs...

Doc, you're not getting away that easily. "Overwhelm" in what respect? From the standpoint of size the QS4s in particular are quite modest. From the standpoint of sound quality, yes, the QSs would be overwhelmingly better than in-ceiling speakers.

John, you're not reading very closely! This is a Zone 2, if I'm reading close enough (), so QSx speakers would be wholly inappropriate.

I'd have some concerns about ceiling mounting the W series; while your drywall ceiling may be the same thickness as normal wall drywall (getting confused here), the strains on a ceiling would be much different than the strains on a wall.

Ken, I noticed the "second zone"(meaning simply area, rather than zone on an HT receiver?), but I'm still reading this as referring to surround, not main, speakers.

I disagree, as it's a workout room, but I suppose there's no real point in arguing about it until Doc gets around to correcting one of us. Hurry up, Doc!

Geez, some people, sleeping or some crap like that...

I suppose he'll try some sort of excuse along the lines that it was 2AM in Virginia. If he is just referring to stereo main speakers, the W3s are so light(9 lbs)that a ceiling mount should be practical.

Yeah, I finally had to turn in. Every once in a while I can get by on a 4-hr sleep night. Can't string 'em back to back like I used to. Did I hear that Sushi is now an authority on sleep disorders?

Yes, this is a second zone entirely different from the HT. There will be a small TV on the wall fed an independent signal from the main HT TV in the next room. Thus the ceiling speakers are going to be stereo mains.

The W3 sound interesting. I've PM'd Alan to see if he will chime in on the W's in the ceiling idea.

As for installing W3 in the ceiling, the in wall frame for the speaker would work equally as well if it was in a ceiling, in my opinion. As for the sound quality, I'll leave that to the experts at Axiom.
