Oh my. This post will either be extremely short (so we can go back to playing it!) or incredibly long (to do it justice). We LOVE the Wii.

Greatest graphics? Nope
Most realistic action? Nope
Amazingly fun and engaging? Absolutely.

It was on from around 11AM (when we hooked it up Christmas morning) until about midnight that night. Everyone from child to grandparent (including those who've never endeavored to try a video game in spite of many opportunities with plenty of PS2s, Xboxs, etc.) was up and playing. Just awesome to witness. And plenty of laughter for everyone. Almost as much fun to watch as to play.

The sports games that come with it appealed to everyone. We also got Rayman, Excite Truck, Tony Hawk, and Madden Football. All have been winners so far.

OK, I'm going into withdrawal. Need to get back to the action. If only I could bowl, golf, play tennis, etc as well in real life!

We got to play ours for about an hour on Christmas Eve before we had to get on the road to the relatives, can't wait to get home, only game we tried was Rayman, but we have Zelda, Monkey Ball, Exite Truck and the Sports waiting to be opened

I'm completely with Rich on this deal.

The Wii is revolutionary in not only the controller, but also the spirit of group interaction it engenders. Fun for the whole family - at the same time. It is the only platform I've seen that made me understand "why not on a PC?".

Bray--

It doesn't really have to be "either x or y" unless economics dictate it. These Wii seems to complement the other systems quite well. The games are different, and won't replace what you get from the other game system.

I think I was in a similar position to you.

Before Christmas, we had a PS2, and I was dying to get a PS3. For many reasons I finally decided that getting a PS3 could wait until next year when it is likely to be a little less expensive, of better quality/fewer bugs, and have some amazing games available.

So then I started thinking we had to get an xbox 360. In fact, some of the chatter here had me convinced that I absolutely had to have one! As I researched it -- including getting a first person shooter for my PS2 -- I realized that I personally don't love the games that the xbox really excels at. I don't want anyone to take that as a value judgment statement; that is purely a statement about the types of games I like. In fact, I pretty much stick to snowboarding on the PS2 (and some other sports).

That, combined with all of the feedback coming out on the Wii, was when I realized that maybe the Wii wasn't just for little kids. The games are different. In some cases the use of the new controller feels a little forced, but I'm sure that will get much better as developers have more time to create new games.

Man, that got long winded! What I'm trying to say is, really think about the games you like to play, and whether playing with others is an important consideration (I don't get that much time to myself!).

Finally, part of what I thought I cared about were the amazing graphics capabilities of the 360/PS3. Guess what? They are gorgeous (or can be), but the Wii certainly doesn't look bad, and it really is the content that matters in the end.

Homedad, we're loving Excite Truck! My boys really enjoy Rayman (it cracks me up!). The Tony Hawk is OK. Haven't had much time with Madden '07 since everyone is constantly trying to get on the game!

Richard, when I was in college one of my roommates brought his old Super Nintendo system and I must say we got more playing time out of it than the PS2. We killed hour upon hour with Super Mario Kart--in my opinion one of the best two player games out there.

Like you said, graphics are nice and all, but fun gameplay will definitely win out in the end.

I too vote for the Wii over the others, start gaming on the PC and you will find it better than any console for the graphics and online play. The Wii however, has the edge with those controllers and really brings you into the game.

You could always get all 3, like some other people I know, as some games just seem to work better on one platform and not the other.

I love my Wii. I haven't stop playing Zelda, I'm on 20 hours but only about 1/3 of the way thru. very deep game.

Wii sports is cool and so is the ability to play older games from NES, TurboGrafx etc.

I have a PS3 coming but might not even use it for games as most of the Wii games are more fun.

Nintendo just made me realize how truly out of shape I am, 3 hours of baseball, boxing and trucking Sunday (playing Wii with the boys), and I was sore Monday morning.

Did you have to force a penalty in order to catch a breather?

We accused one of our forwards of doing that... got a roughing penalty in the second period of the first game. Very much accidentally, he was apologizing while gravity was still taking effect on the other guy.

I marked a goal in each of the games... doubling my all-time season record.

Bren, will the Wii allow you to *drop the gloves* and engage in a friendly game of fisticuffs?

No idea... I play the real thing, outdoors, on ice, against other humans.

Yeah! Glad you like it!

Currently I am totally absorbed by Excite Truck. I've never been into that kind of game before, nor have I ever really worked to complete a game. But I am determined on this one.

I am extremely excited by the impending arrival of SSX Blur (snowboarding) and Tiger Woods Golf. Meanwhile, we're still having fun with Wii sports et al.

Enjoy!

I am curious about the component cables that are supposed to give you a better picture.
Do any of you guys know anything about or have them?

I pre-ordered the Wii play with remote in Jan. with 9 new games, a Shooting Range, Billards, Table Tennis, Laser Hockey and more. I had forgotten all about it until I got an e-mail saying it would be here tomorrow via UPS.

I was just looking at that too.
I came really close to ordering it but I decided to wait until I play the wario ware
smooth moves I already have first,
I guess I need to open it to play it.

I have the component cables. If you have a widescreen, I strongly recommend using component cables. You can actually "hack" your existing cable to use component but it's not pretty, though it works.

I noticed a big difference when playing Zelda. I've played Madden, pretty cool. I have Trauma Center but haven't even opened it yet. Busy w/ my DS Lite playing Phoenix Wright. Yeah, I'm a gamer...

The Mii's are pretty cool. I share mine w/ a bunch of other gamers and when you play Wii sports, their Mii's show up as other players.

I do see a difference with the component cables and I'm using an HD TV. Not as noticable (to me) on Wii Sports, but really obvious with Excite Truck, Madden NFL ,etc.

Would love to get this groups impressions of both Wario Ware Smooth Moves and the new Wii Play. I've read reviews of both, but sometimes it's hard to tell until you can calibrate your preferences with those of reviewers. Since this crowd is obviously so smart and with excellent taste, I assume I can listen to you guys!

Also begs the question of whether we want to share our Mii's with each other. I don't know that many other Wii owners, and I've avoided signing to share with a bunch of folks I don't really know, like over in AVSForums.

Still no time for Wii Play, had to do some renovating to get the new Over the Rang microwave installed. Had to pull new wire from basemnet for it's own circuit, rerouted old hood fan wire into ceiling to be used for new light fixture, moved cabinet over the range up 5" to allow for new microwave and now working on moving cabinet over the fridge up to make room for the new fridge, which is 2" taller than the opening. Maybe I can give you an idea of Wii Play later this week.

I used the component cables on a non HD/ED TV and they made a slight difference, pictures were a little crisper and images seemed to move more smoothly, probably not really worth the money in my case.

Took some time to get my butt whipped by my 6yr old an Wii Play ths afternoon. It is quite fun. My son had a hard time getting the pool cue to work right so I beat him on this one and He also had a hard time working the fishing rod in 3d so I was able to beat him on that one. FInd the Mii was a tie and he creams me on the Cow ride. We split a few games on the target shoot and laser hockey. He destroys me in Tanks! All in all it is worth the money just to see the Miis you have created do something else. I was able to set a gold medal performance on the target shoot once he left and a Silver in Cow ride.

Got my first chance to play the new Wii play today, it has a mixture of a few good games with the rest Imo being mediocre. It did come with an extra remote that I needed, so in my case it was worth it.

Wii play sounds better than WarioWare Smooth Moves.
After the guys at the game store HIGHLY recommended it, I have to say I'm HIGHLY disappointed.
All the mini games are really quick and just dont interest me.
Your mileage may differ.

I always had the feeling that Wario Ware was intended to be played after a few wobbly pops. I have only seen it and not played it yet, will most likely rent it just to see for myself. I did enjoy Elebits and next on the must try list is Sonic for my son, once it is released.

Where did you guys get Wii Play? Local brick and mortar store or online or what?

btw, I bought some Wii controller skins at Decal Girl and am pretty pleased. They may not initially seem like particularly good "value", but how do you quantify "fun and amusing" outside Vegas? Good quality materials and fun designs. Recommended.

I just purchased a Wii for my wife (partly for her b-day). Wasn't an easy task since it's been out of stock pretty much everywhere here in Austin! I spent the past week calling all the local game stores to check if they had received some. Well yesterday our local EB Games had one and I called my wife and she went and got it immediately.

She also got Wii play and paper Super Mario (she loves everything Mario).
I haven't had the time to play much but I really enjoy the Wii sports and I can't wait to get Zelda and Tiger Woods Golf!

I hadn't purchased a Nintendo console since the SNES and I have to say that they're back in the game!! This is truly fun and it's true that pretty much anybody in the family can enjoy it.

I'm gonna get the component cable and try it on my projector.

I've been playing Super Paper Mario. LOVE that game. I didn't play any of the previous versions but I really like the 2D/3D switching. Adds to the puzzle solving.

Have you tried any of the Virtual Console games? I'm thinking about getting Mario 64 for my wife. Also I've noticed that they have NEC Turbographx games!! There's a few titles that I used to play that I wouldn't mind getting. I'll have to get a gamecube controller to be able to play most of them though.

You do know that you only need the GCN controller to play cube games on the WII otherwise you can just use the classic controller, especially if you plan on getting Turbografix16 games, as a few of those need the classic controller to work. The GCN controller will work pretty much all other games though, especially Nintedo games. I found the Classic controller nicer for SM64 as the 'Z' button is available for left or right hands.

I just finished SM 64 and my 3 year old is hooked on it. We have to play it at least once a day. I plan on downloading Starfox 64 next also have the original super mario and pinball for the NES as well as A Link to the Past, which I am almost done as well --- who needs sleep.

My 6 year old wants Sonic - secret rings, for his birthday in 2 weeks, so that should be fun.

That's it. If I win the computer speakers I might have to trade them for a Wii.....

Scratch that. I don't even have a TV right now.

Geez, we better mock while the mocking is good.

Peter doesn't even have a TV!! Ha ha ha ha ha!

Wait, is not having a TV even legal? Can't you get some government assistance or something?

We got the Sonic game - it's pretty fun.

My son got some "Rampage" thing, too. He really likes it.

Maybe he's preparing for this:

In theory, I agree w/ the sentiment. Unfortunately, people would have to pry my Tivo remote from my cold dead hand before I give up my Lost, Heroes and 24 even for one week.

Wait, wait, wait. With Tivo, there's no "giving up." There's only postponement.

The theory in my selling the 32" Sony CRT is that it would give us more active family time -- it has -- and that it would accelerate the purchase of a wall-mountable flat panel TV. Whether or not that part will actually work is unknown. When it does happen -- and it will! -- we're going to also mount curtains on the wall to hide the TV when it's not it use. Ideally, I'd also get W22s and a W100 and keep them behind a(n acoustically transparent) curtain, too.
