I've been diagnosed with upgraditis...help! So I just finished my taxes and it turns out I'm getting back more than I had anticipated. I ordered my m50's 4 weeks ago and still waiting. So can you guess what I'm thinking? Yup, M60's baby! Here's the thing. I'm just not sure if they would be overkill in my 800sq ft condo. While my living/dining room is open concept, about 17x20 overall, my living room portion is about 17x10. My speakers will be about 7.5ft apart and I would be sitting approx 8-9ft max away from the speakers. Should I stick with the M50's or get the m60's now while I can still get them in HG Cherry?

Somehow I have a feeling that no one is going to say it's overkill lol. Just looking for some feedback as I hate second guessing myself.

If you can still contact Axiom and work out the details, my vote is also for the m80's, ooops, I mean m60's. My HT/Recroom is 900 Sq Ft and I owned 60's for 2 years, they did a fabulous job and would have more overall bass/detail than the m50s. I currently own m80's and they are a notch better than the 60's.

You guys are really bad influences you do realize that lol.
I guess it comes down to whether or not I can get the M60's at the prices before the markup since I bought my M50's before the price went up. I'll have to contact Noreen on Monday I guess. To bad I couldn't change the order now.

Go for M80s, I mean M60s sorry. I am more than happy with my M60s, but if I had to do it again, I'd go for M80s.

Why would you want to get M50s so you can wonder whether the M60s would be better? Get the M60s and you'll never be disappointed that you have too much (or not enough) audio. I'm guesssing that you won't be in a condo forever and there will, at some point, be more space to fill. Let your testosterone guide you!

Sure, instead of getting the M50 and wondering if the M60 would be better, get that M60. That way you can wonder if the M80 would be better!

Just be glad you're on the Axiom board and not Candlepower Forums ( www.candlepowerforums.com/vb). The worst we'll do is tell you to get the 60s... or maybe the 80s... ... but when you ask "should I get A or B" on CPF, the standard answer is always "get them both !!". Seriously, if you're going to be listening to a fair amount of so-so-quality content (eg. FM radio counts as so-so these days) you might find the M50s actually sound better -- they're a bit more tolerant of bad recordings and media. In most other respects, the M60s have the edge in clarity and ability to play at higher volumes but honestly the difference in sound seems to be pretty small. Disclaimer -- I have not had a chance to A/B 50s against 60s, just M2, M3, M40 and M60, but by comparing notes with others who had heard 50s against 3s, 50s against 40s etc... we were able to assemble a pretty good picture of how all the models compare. M60s would not be overkill in your current room, unless the layout forced you to stick 'em right against the back wall (remember the 60s are a bit deeper than the 50s). You really will be happy with either of them, but the specific symptoms of your ailment seem to include going "what if..." for the rest of your life if you don't get the higher model. That's how we end up with M60s, QS8s and VP150s when in truth a model or two lower might have been fine.

John I couldn't help myself I had to check out that link, people actually collecting flashlights is one of the craziest things I think I have ever seen. I mean WTF are you gonna do with a $500.00 flashlight

Did you check out how busy the board was ? That's what I find frightening...
The normal thing to do with a $500 flashlight seems to be to put it in a drawer between the $400 flashlight and the $600 flashlight.
The answer to "why collect flashlights" is pretty simple -- other than the helpful "Buy them both" advice from the other CPF board members. Flashlight modifications have evolved to both an insane and a highly useful level, and the resulting "insane" levels of performance are now showing up on a regular basis in commercial lights as well.
Your typical 2 or 3 "D" cell flashlight (say a Maglight) might consume a couple of watts and put out 20 lumens on fresh batteries. With a few mods, you can get 200-800 lumens from the same light which is REALLY HONKIN' BRIGHT and surprisingly useful when you live out in the sticks.
Of course you can go to Costco and pick up a 2000+ lumen HID spotlight for not very much money.
What caught my eye, though, was some of the really "out of control" modifications, such as tacking a 747 landing light on the front of a Maglight for roughly 12,000 lumens.
I guess I shouldn't post my sig line from CPF...

I knew a guy once who got all excited when he could finally buy and LED flashlight for like $50. I think it had to do more for the camping aspect but really, when we go camping about the only time we need a flashlight was trying to get to the bathroom without breaking a leg or flashing it in the cooler to see what kind of beer is left. Didn't think the LED made any difference...but then again I probably was drunk... lol
I should have added that the 60's would definitley have to be about 5 inches from the wall. I would not be able to put them any closer. Because the 50's are two inches less in depth that gives me 7inches from the wall. Is 5 inches too close to the wall or is that enough breathing room?

The 50's are a very nice speaker and to me seemed liked the produced a little more bass than the 60's. The extra mid driver in the 60's seems to blend the whole sound so the bass doesn't stand out as much. Sorry, it's tough to describe. You'll be more than happy with either but the "what if" will always plague your thoughts. As for the distance to the back wall a minimum of 4" is suggested. Of course, until you get them in your room and play with placement you won't know for sure. I found mine very easy to place and haven't noticed much of a difference moving them around. If too close to the back wall and the side wall then yes, an increase in bass wgich gets overstated though. Good luck

Well I left Noreen an email. I have a couple of questions to ask and depending on the answers I'll make my decision.
This site has become the first site I check everyday. I think it has to do with the fact that everyone here is so friendly and helpful. Attitude is checked at the door upon entry. I wish more sites were like this one.

Can anyone who has either the m50 or m60 tell me how far from the floor is the bottom port? I was just talking to a friend and he reminded me that my dog might do some investigative work on my speakers. I'm thinking the bottom port and or woofer on the M60 might be within his reach. Although I could probably keep the covers on when I'm not home and simply take them off when I am.
I'm telling you everything thing I have has to be puppy proofed at the moment. My guy is 10months old and is very very curious.

Well leaving a dog in a cage from 7am to 5pm is far too long in my opinion. If it was for say 5hrs or less then I'd have no problem. I think if I leave the covers on it shouldn't be a problem.

On my M60s, the binding posts are at the bottom on the back and the lower of the two rear ports is a couple of feet off the ground. On the front the port is maybe 11" off the ground under the very bottom of the grill, and the woofer is just above that.
Unless your dog is a wire-chewer I don't think you need to worry. The port is deep enough to keep out all but the most determined cat paws. You can consider it dog-proof.
Agree that 10 hours is a long time in a cage, although for a puppy it's a long time even with the run of the house. I had pretty good luck finding neighbors who would stop in and let them out for a few minutes -- your dog looks like one the neighbors would be happy to look after.
I managed to find a cage big enough to fit any two nephews or all the dogs in the neighborhood, so while it ain't cozy at least it ain't cramped... and if they *do* have to go in the crate they can go at one end and have lots of room in the other end. I wouldn't leave my dogs in the traditional training crate for that long, but if you get a bigger cage then it's more like "restricting them to part of the house".

Well I did it! I told Noreen to go ahead and change my order to M60's. The difference in price wasn't as big as I had thought. God, my neighbours are going to LOVE me lol...I guess I should also invest in some good headphones for that late night movie viewing. I usually try to have my movie viewing done before midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.
Bridgman, I initially had my little guy caged and he was fine with it. Then I decided to keep him in my kitchen which is fairly large. However he started to chew the baseboards even though he had plenty of chew toys! After some short tests I found that he was actually better having the run of the house...err condo. He stopped chewing on the baseboards. I suspect he jumps on my bed and sleeps on it while I'm gone. When I come home I see little indentations near my pillow. I also have a cat so I'm pretty sure there's some chasing going on as well.

>>However he started to chew the baseboards even though he had plenty of chew toys!
If your house was built more than 40 years ago and has shellac'ed (or varnished, I forget) baseboards apparently dogs find that VERY tasty. One of my friends had a 130 year old house and two large dogs -- the dogs pretty much ate all of the woodwork in the house.
>>I suspect he jumps on my bed and sleeps on it while I'm gone.
Ahh, yes, one of my dogs is like that. If you let him sleep on something REALLY comfortable he's good for the whole day, particularly if he knows he's not supposed to sleep there.
One of my friends threatened to make a 1/3-scale couch for my dogs to sleep on when they're in the cage.

Don't forget bigger dogs means more poop to pick up...so don't bother putting that winter shovel away....

Let's not go there.
When I lived in the city it was warm enough that we didn't get much accumulation of snow over the winter, so I could poop-scoop through the winter.
Out here, the average temperatures are about 6 degrees lower and the precipitation is quite a bit higher. As a result, I was marvelling at how 50 pound bags of dog food were disappearing into the dogs while the snow covered up all the evidence.
Now it's spring. The melting snow lovingly deposits the accumulated droppings on the ground, creating what can only be described as an "endless sea of poop".
Forget the shovel, I'm thinking roto-tiller.
I don't see what's wrong with a 1/3 scale couch. I have 1/3 scale dogs, after all.

In my books there are only three sizes of dogs ranging from smallest to biggest.
The Yappers. The Barkers. and the Woofers.
Me I prefer a big dog with a good Woof!

Well it seems my Bogart doesn't fit the list. he's 12 inches at the shoulder and about the only time he ever barks is when I steal one of his toys and he's chasing me around the couch to get it back lol.
I really wish someone would explain to me why someone gets a big dog then refuses to pick up after it?? But then again there are those other people who think that their dog is so small that there's no reason to pick up after them...it really is disgusting! That's a major pet peeve (no pun intended).
