My parents are looking for a new TV. They just moved, and they are using an old 27" for now. One catch is the sun glares on the current TV in the afternoon. They aren't sure what they are doing as far as window treatments yet, so they want something that handles light well and doesn't have bad problems with glare. I know front projector is bad without good light control, is there a type that is especially good? They are currently sitting about 17 feet away and are looking to get a 55" (I know, too small for that far away, but they don't want to go any bigger).

I have a 32" Sammy LCD that I am sure could be used on the beach. It resists glare that well. I believe, but could be wrong, that LCD is the best for resisting glare. I don't know if you can get 55" LCDs though.

Yeah Jason, I agree with Mo that LCDs are generally the way to go with bright lighting conditions. LCDs are available in that size and larger, but the price begins to skyrocket above 50" or so. Just to name one possibility, the Sony KDL-52XBR4 is nice, but runs around $4,000. Maybe they should sit closer?

I told them they should sit closer no matter how big they get. They need a 100+ from that distance. I'm not sure that that will happen though. They are still finalizing furniture arrangement. The builder also put in speaker wire for surrounds, but put them way too close to each other.
As far as LCD goes, I know in the past there have been motion blur issues with sports on LCD. Has this been corrected in newer models?

I purchased my 32" Sammy LCD last September. At that time, I had 6 other flat-panel TVs that I was evaluating at the same time. The Sony Bravia LCD was absolutely terrible with action and it was far more expensive. Everyone in my family could see the motion artifacts even with slow-moving clouds. This was extremely surprising because the Bravia had a faster response time spec than all the other sets. The LG RU LCD had some motion artifacts apparently that I couldn't see but my wife could as she is far more sensitive to this effect than I am. All other sets had no blurring issues.
BTW, although the Sammy wasn't the cheapest, it was the clear winner in terms of picture quality and usability and my entire family agreed on this. Part of the reason that it was so good, I think, was the fact that I found the perfect calibration settings on the net. I could have never stumbled on these settings myself. When my buddy saw the set, he immediately went out and bought himself a 42" model.

My father just bought a Sharp Aquos 46" LCD and the picture is great, no blurring I could see during 2 football games I have watched on it in non-hd. The DVD's we have watched looked amazing. No glare and it was directly opposite a large sliding patio door.
