My Sherwood Newcastle R965 has an option for selecting "Digital Re-Mastering" in the set-up menus. The manual states: "Select this to process the input signal digitally and to convert its sampling frequency to 192 kHz for a more detailed sound reproduction."

What does this mean, and should I select it?

I dunno. It kinda sounds like your telling the receiver to do the digital to analog conversion. Hopefully someone else with a Sherwood Newcastle can chime in.

Sounds like one of the extra DSP options receivers through in on top of the standare Dolby and DTS. My Denon also has a DTS settin similar to that, I usually just use the standare Auto sensing option and non of the extra wide screen, 7 stereo, etc. options.

Bob, the described option is an example of the "upsampling" silliness which implies that higher real sampling than the 44.1 KHz CD standard can occur and that this would provide "more detailed sound". Neither statement is true and the actual sampling which took place in the recording remains at 44.1 KHz, of course, which is more than adequate since it allows audibly perfect sampling of frequencies up to 22.05 KHz, which is above the limit of human hearing.

The upsampling option is simply a variation on oversampling which has been in almost universal use for over 20 years to permit a more gentle output filter to be used. The over/up sampling creates a higher frequency with inserted blank samples, and the filtering doesn't have to be completed until that higher frequency is reached. No "Digital Re-Mastering" is possible and it doesn't make any significant difference whether it's selected or the usual oversampling that takes place when it isn't selected does the job.
