Hello All,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

We're moving to Malaysia in a few months, hauling my trusty axioms with me. Wondering if anyone has experience travelling overseas with AV equipment.

Specifically:
It's 220 power there - Can I power my amp with a transformer? It's a yammy RXV-2500, it calls for 500 Watts. I also have a HSU STF 2 that calls for 300W. I see transformers up to 2000W but I'd hate to see my amp up in smoke so just want to verify this will all work seeing how it's relatevely high current.

Can anyone recommend a good dvd player that is region free and plays PAL and NTSC dics, SACD would be a nice touch but not manditory. Is there a hi def player out that does all that? I take it when a PAL disc is played in these machines it outputs NTSC ? .. see next question

I'd like to bring my 46" DLP also, is there a way (inexpensive would be good) to convert the signal from PAL to NTSC for local tv?

One last thing, we also have an xbox and a Wii, are there NTSC and PAL discs for these or are they all the same? If I end up having to output PAL (buy a tv there) can I do that with an adapter or something?

Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks a bunch!

Pierre

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the line conditioners like the Belkin PF60 and such take 220 and will convert it to useable power for AV? I am at work and time is getting tight so i can't look it up.

I don't think this is truly relevant to this specific thread, but I saw "power conditioner" and I remembered the bit below in the A1400 manual that got me scared quite a bit of power conditionners.

From the A1400 manual:

"Plug your power cord into the wall and turn on the mains power switchv(see Step Three). WARNING: Do not plug this into a power
conditioner. Power conditioners are known to cause overvoltage
which will damage your amplifier."

Power conditioners protect against surges, spikes, EMI and RFI. They aren't voltage stabilizers. A voltage regulator is needed for that. I don't understand how power conditioners cause overvoltage though.

I have no clue. I was just bringing up that warning from the manual.

Manuals that have terse (and controversial) warnings like that should provide clarifying detail.

I would think if anything a lower grade of line conditioner would hurt the performance of the 1400 by not allowing enough juice to make it through, kind of the opposite of an overvoltage.

Sorry Eric, the air crew hasn't heard anything, as far as they know everything is still normal.

If you Google a bit, you will find a fair number of sites selling Step Down converters for use overseas. Some also seem to sell regionless DVD players.

I didn't want to post any example names because I have no knowledge of these companies and wouldn't want to lead you to one that is less reputable. It does, at least, seem as if there are some options.

Most of the equipment I had in Europe was dual voltage so I didn't have to worry about it. Do you know if any of your equipment is?

Don't think any of it is dual voltage, my manuals just state 110. Although the yamaha lists varions versions, the north american version only lists 110.

That leads me to another question...

If i bring over the tv, and get a transformer to get 110, will the 50 hz thrown a monkey wrench into things? The TV states 110/60hz. I think this affects crt's but im not sure about the DLP.

Thanks!

P.

I know it doesn't with appliances, I wouldn't know about a tv though...
