I've been holding out to purchase the Newcastle R-972, but have been wondering if it'd make more sense to get the R-872. From all I've heard the PS3 does an outstanding job of uprezing standard def DVD alredy. The main reason I was going to wait for the R-972 was the Realta video uprezing. Is the Realta chip really going to be much better than what my PS3 is doing? Are there any other things anyone knows about the R-972 that would make it worth waiting for?

or for that matter, jumping on the Denon bandwagon and getting the 3808?

Just a bad joke that likely would have offended some....

I've read several accounts that Realta is quite a bit better than both PS3 and the Denon 3808 (both of which I have). I have not seen Realta in person so I don't know what I'm missing (and am glad I don't as I'm pretty satisfied with how it looks through these two devices)

Craig, you may have some of the features a bit tangled-up. The 972 isn't scheduled for the Realta; the video processing will supposedly use the Reon chip. The most significant advance in the 972 which has been a subject of discussion for over a year is the audio, rather than the video, processing. A reportedly just "slightly simplified" version of the highly acclaimed pro version of the Trinnov Audio Optimizer apparently promises to take over the lead in room equalization processing technology.
Incidentally, the most recent of the numerous delays targets late October.

Not sure who you are listening to that is telling you the PS3 does well at SD / DVD deinterlacing / scaling, but I think it sucks at it. The PS3 does a lot of things extremely well, but SD/DVD is not one of them.
I would not get the 872. I would either wait for the 972 (which on paper looks like it will be an excellent machine), or I’d jump on the 3808 bandwagon and put the money you save toward a DVDO Edge video processor. Then you will have cutting edge video AND audio processing.
One negative going towards the 972, is it will undoubtedly come with a few bugs as all new electronics seam to ship with a few nowadays. It will take time and firmware updates to resolve them. The 3808 is last year’s model and is proven.

Sounds like the 972 is still the one for me. Now we just have to wait and see if the dang thing ever ships. All it's "cutting edge" technology will be dated by the time it hits shelves!
