Just curious, have you had it at say 0 db (ref) for a whole disc?

Good question.

No, I have not. Right around -10 is about all I can stand (at most). I think I may have had it around -6 before. No way I could listen at 0 for an entire disc. Some discs I can't get any higher than -15.

Ooooh, he came up for air! I don't think the scale on any given receiver means anything. I am running between 35 and 50 on my Sherwood.

Depending on the disc, 50 is anywhere between 75 and 85 db. I would have to say that 75 db is 'reference' for me since that is my preferred listening levels most days.

Fred - agreed. I asked this question earlier and was informed by the more knowledgeable folks here there is no consistency across receivers for volume levels. Check the link for more info if you're interested.

cool, didn't know that. thanks for the link.

I don't own a SPL meter, so I guess I cannot yet correctly answer mapatton's question.

Even without the SPL, I think your answer still stands. There's no way most of us could listen at 0 db on any of our receivers for an entire disc... I'm pretty sure that would be inviting hearing loss at worst or a headache at best.

I do have one cd that was recorded very soft and I have to have the 3808 above 0 to get to 80db!!! I think it is of my classical discs, I can't remember I haven't played it much as I stream most of the music now.

Wow... I'd hate to be in the room when you changed sources or popped in a new disc at that setting. ouch!

Yeah, that's one where you'd want to be really careful to change the volume level before you shut down the system...

The 3808 actually has an option to always start at the same level, or to start it at the last volume played... making the wrong choice after a listening session like that could give someone else in the house a heart attack if they turned on the TV after you'd left it at 0 dB.

I'm imagining the look on my wife's face if that happened to her.... I don't think I'd hear the end of it for a long time! ;\)
