Fellows;

I am in a 13x17x8 room, listening across the short axis. I currently have M60's, VP100, QS4's and Hsu VTF-2. I need a pair of rear surrounds to complete 7.1 setup. I have 3 options that I am considering, and I thought I'd run them all by you all to see what you think.

1. Get another pair of QS-4 for rear surround

2. Get a pair of QS8 off factory outlet, use them for surrounds, move QS4's to rear surround

3. Get a pair of M2's and full metal brackets, use the M2's for rear surrounds, and also utilize them as rears when using DV-Audio

I'm beginning to like option no. 3, because I've been hearing that rear surround information is best heard via direct as opposed to bi-di-quadropole speakers, and that high resolution DVD-Audio content is also heard best this way. It is also the least expensive option.

Another question...when mounting M2's with the full metal brackets, do you have to drill holes in the speaker back? is there room between the terminals and the bass reflex port?

Thanks again for your valuable advice

Mark

Yes, you will have to drill holes into the back of the speaker. Do not worry, there are instructions online somewhere where they show you how to do it safely.

Ask Joe and he will gladly give you the info needed.

Yes, if you are into DVD-A, I would second the option 3. But my question is, how much distance can you get from the rear surrounds to the listening position, given the relatively short overall listening axis? Personally, I wouldn't bother getting a rear surround speaker(s) unless I have a generous distance from them, say, no shorter than 7-8 feet.

The rear surrounds are going to go about 4 feet above and 4 feet lateral to the listening spot, which makes them about 6 feet from the listening position

It may worth trying them if you can get a net 6-feet distance. But I would double-check if your DVD-A player is capable of variable channel delays. Without properly setting channel delays, rear surrounds that are placed closer than front channels can get very annoying, demanding too much of your attention to themselves.

I use a M2i for my rear channel, and I used a FMB to mount it. I did have to drill 5 pilot holes in the back of the speaker. I was able to do this easily. 1/2" deep drill holes work well, a piece of electrical tape on the bit works well as a depth gauge. I found some dry wall anchors at Home Desperate that were rated at 148 lbs. I have been known to play some movies and music really loud...So far things are staying attached.
