Hi

I am looking to purchase a new receiver
I have been looking at the denon 3808 but now the new 3310 has come out which one should I go with. The only difference I can see is the 3310 has the new prologic. It is a few hundred dollars more than the 3808.

The 3808 is a great receiver and is one of the preferred receivers for the people on this board. Several members here own one and are very happy with it(including me). In addition it seems like Denon has adjusted the model numbers for the new receivers; it seems like the new 3310 is more like the 2809 and the 4310 is the replacement for the 3808. I'm sure you would be very happy with the 3808.

Larry, there's a little more difference than that. As Lorenzo indicated, the 3310 can be viewed as an upgraded 2809, while the 4310 is the upgraded 3808. The 3808 has slightly more power, although the 3310 should have more than enough for nearly all circumstances and the 3808 edge wouldn't be significant.

The 3310 has Audyssey MultEQ, which is one step down from MultEQ XT on the 3808, which has more measuring positions and higher resolution filters for more accurate results.

On the other hand, the 3310 has the Anchor Bay video processor, which is a significantly better upscaler/deinterlacer than the rather average Faroudja processor on the 3808.

The decision involves balancing features against price and isn't all that simple.

How important is the new prologic

Larry, the answer to that can also vary. DPLIIz allows you to use the channels usually fed back surround material to instead assign them to "height" speakers positioned a few feet above your mains. It's said to be an especially useful alternative for those sitting almost up against the back wall who don't have enough room behind them for a rear surround effect to develop. The height speakers are fed non-directional ambience material extracted from other channels which is said to generally represent effects best heard from an upward angle. Early reports have varied(possibly mostly due to varying source material)as to the effect, although some are enthusiastic.
