Best Buy finaly delivered my panasonic 54v10 last week ( Only took 2 months) I also purchased a Denon 3310 from 6th ave
I have spent the last 2 nights hooking it all up I am not familiar with the new technology. All my other equimpent is 14 years old. So this new Denon reciever is a little intimidating
My question is this?? Is there any way to set it up so I get cable tv & sound directly from the tv with out turning on the reciever
I have it set up with the hdmi going from cable box to reciever to tv
Thank you
Larry

Not unless you make secondary connections (usually L&R analog) directly from the devices to the TV. Then you'll have to connect their video to the TV too. You'll have one video input which gets the picture as switched by the receiver, and other inputs for each device. When not using the receiver the TV will pick what you're seeing/hearing, but the receiver will do that when it's on. It'll really complicate things.
Most people just forget about the speakers in the TV (mine have never been attached in the first place), and listen through the receiver full time. Is there a particular reason you don't want to do that?

Chris has it right, but I would disagree that it is too complicated. I had my TV set up this way so that Input 1 was through the audio system, but Input 2 was for use with the TV alone. It certainly increases the number of wires but you can use the component output to have HD on both inputs.
but I agree, always using the Home Theater is more simple to use, less expensive b/c you need less wires, and sounds a lot better.

I think the first option would be easier than a HDMI splitter. Just tell them to select input 1 when they watch TV. No problem, TV gets sound and pic from box. When you want to watch it in HT, select input 2 and turn on the AVR. A universal remote with macro like a Harmony 890 would also make it easy. have a family button that selects Input 1 and a HT button that turns on the AVR and selects Input 2, etc.

The Denon 3310 should have the capability to pass thru the HDMI signal while in standby mode (my Denon 1909 does). This way the TV video and audio come thru without having to power on the AVR. Check for a setting for 'HDMI control' or something along those lines. Otherwise hook up the STB via component and analog audio to the TV.

You can connect it were ever there's an available component input on the TV. Just remember which one it is because that's what you'll want to select to see the cable box.
But yeah, the RGB+LR is a good connection to use, it'll get you pretty good picture quality.
