Just got my Axiom QS4s. While trying to line up the bracket with a stud I discover it is not possible to place them where I was going to. Around 3' up on the wall directly behind my couch. They would have been right at each end of the couch. That was my best option as side wall placement is not available. My next option is putting them around 4' up and 2' out from the listening area. Still on the wall directly behind the couch. Would this be a bad placement??

Do you really need to find a stud?

My Qs8's are mounted without a stud and they have been fine for over a year. The speakers are not that heavy so they should be just fine. Unless your walls are really weak. You would know bettter than me I am sure.

I agree. If you are using the brackets that come with the speakers, and you are going into drywall, then ordinary anchors will be fine. If your situation is different, please let us know.

MM, I assume that you're using the QS4s as side surrounds in a 5.1 setup, not back surrounds in a 7.1. In that case they shouldn't be "directly behind" the couch. Since they can't be on the side walls they should be on the back wall possibly 5-6' up and separated as widely as possible, so that even though they're on the back wall, some side surround effect is given.

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't sure if these would be too heavy for standard drywall anchors. Does anyone recall what size they used. Plastic or metal ones.

JohnK: These are being used as side surrounds in a 5.1 set-up. Unfortunantly side positioning or mounting of any kind is not an option in my room layout. Originally I was going to use a pair of direct firing bookshelf speakers on stands facing each other behind the couch but decided the QS4 design might work better. So you are saying that on the back wall at that height and spread out will still give me good surround effects?? And would this position work better than what I was originally going to do. Which was place them at both ends of the couch about 3' up.

Someone recently posted some pictures on here showing their QS8s hanging from these. It looked like a really nice custom installation. They might do the trick for you...

Michael_A: I'm a little north of Dover. I've been to the White Marsh area a few times. About an hour from me.

As far as ceiling mount that isn't really an option either. I have a "popcorn" ceiling. Trying to mount anything to that would be a mess. I was really trying to avoid using any kind of brackets anyway. With the fact that my surrounds have to mount almost directly behind the couch, I wanted to avoid bringing them out any further towards the listening area. The closer to the wall the better.

Best thing to do is put there where you want temporarily, and see how it sounds. If it's good go ahead and mount. I used the QS8 brackets but mine are mounted on studs. I'm just a litte paranoid, being in SF Bay Area (earthquake country).

BTW, my QS8's are pretty off-center from the listening position. My Pioneer 45TX does some correcting w/ the MCACC and sounds great.

I don't remember the exact size I used, but they were plastic and required a 1/4 or 3/8 hole.
