From a recent post where Randy linked to a Youtube video I've decided to give Audyssey another try.
Now to the question. Where is it best to set the sub gain when running the test. The sub is an eD A5-350.

Rick, I'm not familiar with what was on Youtube, and I'm curious if the volume control setting on the sub was thought to be crucial. Generally, I'd think that an initial setting near the middle would be appropriate, and if the calibration resulted in setting the sub trim at or near the minimum(or maximum)then the sub volume control should be set lower(or higher)so that the final calibration result is closer to 0.
Incidentally, it's a volume or level control, not a gain control. Home audio amplifiers have a fixed gain, and what that control does is to vary the amount of voltage that's let in to be subjected to that gain.

Rick, after you run the first sweep from the primary seat, instead of going onto location 2, there is an option to view your results upto that point. You can then see what it did to your sub levels. If they are set way to low, say -10dB, you can then lower the gain on the sub a little, and rerun your first sweep. Once I find a setting I am happy with, I continue on complete my other 7 locations.
One thing people don't know, is the 5-10 seconds after each speaker finishes the chirp noise, when it is silent, the mic is still measuring the silence of the room, so it is important to keep things very quiet until it is time to move the mic to each location.

OK John, but you are not entirety correct either. I have an amp (Luxman) that does have variable gain controls

Rick, I'm still curious as to what was the "answer" that you found about setting the control.
What is that Luxman? If it actually varies the gain(not just labeling the level control "gain" as is sometimes incorrectly done)that's very unusual and I'd like to check it out.

It was basically what you said John. If you ever get to the Chicagoland area come on down and take a look at the old Luxman
