The sub isn't sounding thin. What happens is that I get better sound from the mains when I play music with no sub in "Stereo direct" mode (which plyas with no sub).
I've been playing most music in Stereo direct mode but I do change it to 2 channel stereo (which includes sub) for raggae and the likes.
I believe the "direct" mode on your Denon is called "straight" on the Yamaha FWIW.

Hi Mark,
You echoed my concerns regarding stereo. I have the same problem. I've been wondering why listening to music in stereo seemed "thin". I could never get enough bass to
make the sound satisfying from my M22s. It just doesn't
compare to listening to DVD music in Dolby or other surround mode. Any suggestions or thoughts ? Thanks.

When you switch to the "direct" or "straight" mode you are bypassing and turning off all the unneccesary circuitry, such as video switching, EQs, etc so you can expect a better quality sound. But it shouldn't be a huge, dramatic difference.
On the Yamaha's this may also turn off the parametric equalization if you performed one, which may make a considerable difference in your sound quality too. Although the Denon has this capability I have it disabled and never plan to use it.

Update:
Regarding the more crisp sound when in "Stereo Direct", I switched the equalization from Parametric or PEQ to Graphic or GEQ. Now the mains sound Identical when I switch from 2 channel stereo to stereo direct. It makes perfect sense though. What the above step does is remove the equalization YPAO performed. That's the reason why the "optimizer" light stayed on even after manually configuring the speakers. IMO it sounds better in GEQ mode than PEQ. I had to turn the sub down a bit but I'm happier with the overall sound.
Thanks again for the setup tips.

Maybe it shouldn't be a huge difference, but it is. It is practically a night/day type thing. I listen to CD's in pure mode in stereo almost exclusively. That is what sounds best in my system.

Funny, my CDs sound best in DPL2-Music or Neo6-Music. They're incredibly dull in Stereo. (H/K 525) Caveat: I only have a 2.1 system, so I'm already doing some pretty funky stuff...

It'll be interesting to see if that's still the case when you upgrade from your CSW Ensemble to Axiom M??s.
