Hey Guys, Need some help understanding this SVS woofer. My axiom EP350 that was 15 years old died a few months ago. I picked up an SVS 2000 (not the pro), it was around $600. Frequency says it goes as low as axiom and it's 500 watts, with a cabinet almost twice as large as my axiom 350. Please help me understand why it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as my 15 year old axiom EP350.

Ported or sealed? Regardless, it should sound good. Maybe you need to play with its location. Is it movies or music that you're not satisfied with?

It's with movies and music, much more noticeable with music. It's a ported sub, one port. but dang shouldn't it sound similar to the EP350? It's 500 watts and a huge cabinet. I'm just trying to understand why the 350 sounded so different. Same settings on, same placement. Is there a processor or some other component in the speaker that can make a large difference?

What is the low pass filter on the sub set to? It's the third knob from the top. And what is the crossover on the yammy?

Low pass is 120hz. I don't know the crossover. The setup menu only allows for reverse or normal on the sub. All other speakers you can set a crossover between 40-200hz. But nothing for sub.

That yammy of yours definitely has subwoofer management. Find the crossover and set it to 80Hz. Set the low pass on the sub to LFE.

The SVS is more linear than your 15 year old 350 and should sound good. Unless it's busted.

why only 80? isnt that too high? I thought the crossover was the level that it stop sending signals, so in essences it should be lower, like 20? I guess I had that all wrong, help me.

Your speakers can't produce lows as well as a sub. Common practice is to set the receiver to pass lows below 80Hz to the sub. 80 is a good place to start but lower could work well too.
Do not go higher than 80 because you don't want voices coming from the sub.

When you set the sub to LFE, it means you're allowing your receiver to take over the bass hand-off between the sub and the speakers.

The 350's equivalent of the LFE setting is 150Hz using the toggle switch on the back of the unit.

I understand. thank you for going into such detail. I've made the prescribed changes which has resulted in a much better sound. My ears still miss the 350.

On paper, your SVS is the better sub. But the 350 may integrate better with your room.

The flat response of the SVS may result in some boom and sloppiness if boosted by your room modes. On the other hand, the less than flat response of the 350 may get boosted enough by your room modes to become more flattish and hence more pleasing to your ears.

Dont hesitate to experiment with lowering the cross-over on your yammy.
