I have already decided to purchase M60 fronts, VP150 center, QS8 for surrounds, M2 for rear surrounds (if I go with a 7.1 setup), and a HSU STF-3 sub. My problem is with the room layout. Right now, the way the room is laid out, the left side is open to the rest of the house. I can change things around and have the rear of the room open to the rest of the house. Would this be better?

The deciding factor should be placement of the QS8. With the back open they can be side mounted on the walls according to the Dolby guidelines, or stand mounted behind the listening position.
With one side open they can be stand mounted or located on the wall behind the listening position.
I would go for the rear opening as it gives a more balanced alignment.

I have similar situation. I have a split-level with a half wall on the backside. I used the full metal bracket for the QS8's on the Sides, which allowed me to tune. You could do this with the stands as well. I'm looking at the M22's on stands for the rear channel(s). This will create a more defined surround to compensate for my room anomalies. I have about 6 feet behind the seating.
If you could provide a diagram, I bet more experts would chime in. Althought, the best way to tune a system is to experiment with placement. This is the fun part.
