I'm thinking about getting an Infrared transmitter - one that will take an infrared command from my remote, and transmit it via a wire to a component that is hidden behind a door.

Does anybody have any advice about one to use, and what I will need to set such a transmitter up? I will only need to control one or two (tops) different components - the rest will be in a place where the remote will get to it. So, I'm not looking for anything real fancy or expensive.

Thanks in advance.
Adrien

Radio Shack has them. I have been running the Rat Shack cubes for a few years with no problems at all.

Personally, I got a Xantech kit from BayBloorRadio ($200 Canadian - yikes, pretty pricey!) and haven't looked back (Kit291 comes with 4 wired emitters). It's very reliable.

Does anybody have any comments on the Hotlink system. It comes with 6 flashers for around $100

Are these the things that let you use your remote control from upstairs to change the settings on a reciever that is downstairs? Signal goes through walls, no LOS needed, etc?

That would be nice if I eventually upgrade my M22 in my HT and keep the M22 as secondary speakers in another room.

I ended up going with the "hot link pro" system found here.

It has an infrared "eye" which can be placed anywhere the remote can see it. I will place it very close to the TV. Then, it comes with 6 flasher/IR repeater, each on its own 7 foot wire. These wires terminate in an optic portion which is stuck to the IR receiver on the components.

I plan to hide my digital cable box behind the TV (no place in my component rack). Since the digital cable displays the channel and information etc. on screen, I won't need to look at the box (especially considering it just displays the time when I'm not keying any info into it.)

I will send the second flasher to a VCR which will be hidden behind a door (again, no room in rack, and it gets very little use).

The third will go to a 400 cd mega changer daisy changed to a 200 disc changer. This, I will hide some where else (TBD). Since it has on screen capabilities, I won't worry about being able to see the front of it.

I'll probably go ahead and fix the remaining two flashers onto my DVD and reciever, just so pointing the remote for macros won't be an issue...

I'll let you know how it work out for me when I get it all set up (circa two weeks, upon moving into the new home).
