Was planning on purchasing an Epic 60/500 speaker system for a 4,000 cubic foot family room when I relocate in a few weeks. Am a bit concerned about some reviews on the internet regarding the VP150 Center channel speaker; Too Bright?;not a good match with the other speakers in the package etc. Any comments? Second I currently have a 5 yr. old Sony STR-DA333ES 80 Watt/Ch. receiver, was advised by axioms home theater experts to upgrade to a DENON AVR-2805. Have seen the 2805 & 3805 at a local retailer. Is the 3805 worth the extra cost or would it be an overkill for my listening area.

The 3805 has nice features and a really spiffy remote but there aren't a lot of differences that would really affect how the system sounds. IIRC the power difference is quite small.

I have M60s and QS8s but VP100 center so can't comment much on the VP150. I believe M60/QS8/VP150 is the most popular combination (sirquack did a nice poll recently) so if there were serious problems with the 150 we would probably see more posts about it.

There are a couple of people who have replaced their 150 with other centers (Paradigm CC-370 in one case, Rocket in another) and preferred the replacement. Not sure if the root cause was a defective center or just a preference for the more laid-back Paradigm/Rocket sound.

At least one owner really hated their VP150 until they played with placement for a while -- once they got the placement right they were happy campers. Don't remember who it was -- anyone ?

Who ever said the vp150 is too bright, is freaking stupid… the vp 150 is a wonderful speaker, and sense 70% of the voices in a movie come from the center, the 150 is perfectly suited for reproducing the sounds of conversations ect… I would defiantly go with the 150 over the 100 if you can swing the cash.. also the 500 is a very good sub as well… if you can swing the extra cash/room for a 600, I would do that also… actually I have done it, and would defiantly do it again..

What you have planned will sound very nice, sure you can read the reviews on the internet, and make some what of an educated opinion, but I know that I would NOT, classify my speakers as “bright” I would classify the cheep 300$ systems as “bright” sure, because they have no midbass…

Im gona stop there man.. if you buy the system, you are planning on, I would pretty much bet you will be happy with it… as far as your receiver goes, I have separates, a receiver, and a 5 channel amp. My amp does 175watts per channel, and it pushes the speakers quite nicely…I have a marantz mm9000, as do a few other guys on the board with the epic 60 system… and everyone with the separates loves the set up… so I can’t comment on your receiver… one thing though, you can never have too much power…

I've been extremely happy with my M60/VP100?QS8 setup. The VP100 is a fine speaker and won't disappoint.

Being a Denon guy, I'd point you to the 2805 - it's an excellent, powerful, feature rich unit. The addiitonal stuff the 3805 offers likely won't matter to you. Don't get me wrong, I'd choose the 3805 just because it's available, but I regularly choke on testosterone .

Here, compare them side by side.

My thanks to all the replies so far on my question(s), it is greatly appreciated. I thought a big part of the price increase between the Denon AVR-2805 & 3805 was mainly for the fancy remote control. The 20 Watt per channel difference won't really amount to anything so I feel comfortable going with the 2805. any more comments from users regarding the VP150 center channel would be appreciated, never heard any serious gripes about the M60's, EP500 or the QS8's. Thanks again everyone.

You'll be happy as a pig in sh!t. There is nothing wrong with the VP150 (unless you just want to sit and anal-yze pink noise). I'm guessing that some of the "brightness" people attribute to the VP150 is actually coming from those free-singing M60 tweeters supplying ambient effects.

There were some other 'concerns' about the VP150 and its dispersion, but to date some of these issues had been attributed to home users doing their own tests with inadequate information about about proper audio testing and the tools/methods they were using. The second bias that i've seem come up time and time again stems from the fact that the Axiom VP150 does not use the 'same' driver arrangement as other companies do. Well neither do the Tannoy dual concentric based units but i haven't read about complaints on those. You can read about these issues in this old discussion.
I think you will find the VP150 to be an excellent centre channel once the whole system gets setup properly.

I don't have the vp150, I settled for the 100 so I can't give any insights into it. The 'b' issue with Axiom is a croc. If anything they are less bright than some other brand of speakers. The issue some have with them, I would term forward. Isn't that what everyone is looking for in a speaker system.
