It puts the beer in its mouth and enjoys it.

We have a local brewery, Red Oak. Anyone ever tried their signature beer?

We have a local brewery in Kansas City too. Boulevard Brewing Company. About the only thing I see in stores is their Pale Ale and Wheat Beer. The Pale Ale is ok and I don't care for the Wheat Beer.

Peter and Tom, thanks for your suggestions; I'll prepare a list to give him Sunday. By the by, Tom, it was just the humorous Bud Light Super Bowl commercials that was brought up. He certainly didn't mention it as a favorite or have such a "mindset". His immediate thoughts were "bitter, dark and yeasty", so I assume that's what he likes already. If there was something else that you were hesitating to suggest, I'm sure that he'd be glad to hear it.

Ah. Sorry for the misunderstanding, John.

Trois Pistoles from Unibroue has lovely yeast and is dark. It's not that bitter, though.

Any number of Russian Imperial Stouts - North Coast, Victory, Stone, Bell's.

I ought not neglect a relatively new and evolving style - black IPA or "Cascade Dark Ale" - Good examples from Deschutes (Hop in the Dark) and Full Sail (Bump in the Night), among others. The Yakima Glory from Victory is really nice (as are all their beers). It is an interesting style, since the bitterness comes from both hops and roasted malt. I'm not sure I'd really characterize them as "yeasty", though. Perhaps if dispensed live instead of bottled.

CatB - yes, we are now getting the Boulevard beers in Washington. The few I've tried were credible but not terribly memorable. We are getting champagne bottles of their boutique beers mostly; at their price point, I have lots of choices. Would love to go to the brewery, though. I'll bet it is a great place.

I think bitter and yeasty are difficult to express simultaneously in an enjoyable way. Hefeweizens are some of the yeastiest beers, and they're barely bitter at all.

How about the widely-available New Belgium 1554?

Session Black Lager or some other Schwarzbier might be nice.

I think that Deschutes Black Butte Porter is a very approachable beer. St. Peter's Old Style Porter from England.

Ayinger Ur-Weisse or another quality dunkelweizen.

Beer with character costs more than Bud Light.

The 1554 is an excellent dark beer to start off on. Very smooth and drinkable and not as bitter one would expect. A nice change of pace.
