For the sound bar systems, I like the Boston TeeVee model 2. It is so simple to set up, operate, and place. It gets full range sound into the room in a really easy way. As far as the other sound bars, they are all too gimmicky and will be tough to set up for any audio noob to get any kind of benefit over a 2.1 sound bar.

Other than that, i would recommend a 3.1 system and forget the rears for now. An m2, vp100, and x-sub system would go a long way towards getting him into good audio and is upgradeable along the way. The m2s could go to the surround when he gets some more leeway from the wife. If she likes little cute speakers, these Energy speakers are supposed to sound great and look awesome IMO. You can get nice little stands for them from energy.
