Well, having been through most of my rock library I can honestly say that the majority of it.....well....sucks. I know there is great sounding orchestral, vocal, jazz, soft rock and such but where are the good ROCK recordings. Understanding that 'raw' is a desired trait to many rock group recordings, I am wondering, is heavier music not meant to be heard with pristine quality? I have heard a few recordings, not my favorite mind you, that sound good. (i.e. Metallica's Load, Relient K's new album) Can anyone point me in the direction of some good rock recordings? I really like Melodic Death Metal (Dark Tranquility, Children Of Bodom, Kalmah, etc), Metal (Black Label Society, old Metallica, Pantera, Damage Plan) and even soft nu-metal/rock (Cold, Alter Bridge, Breaking Benjamin). Can anyone list any known good recordings in the vein of this music? Thanks in advance.

Max, I'd like to be helpful, but this is the only "Rock" recording that I'm familiar with.

I find it punny that John is not man-enough for rock.

Most of my heavier metal is also recorded with very crappy sound. Metallica, Master of Puppets seems to stand out but that's when they broke away a bit from the traditional that I think you enjoy more.
Moving even further away from your preference, their S&M DVD that they recorded with the San Fransisco Symphony is supposed to have exceptional sound quality, although we have never been able to convince JohnK to listen to it, even though it involves a symphony.
I recently really liked listening to DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage but I can't say the sound is demo quality.
I'll have to browse through the artist lists on my Squeezebox tonight to think of some others. I know there are more if I could think of them.
Edit: Adding an afterthought. I have two versions of Masters of Puppets. The remastered one sounds way better than the original. Can't remember who did it but I know "Gold" is part of the title.

Hello. Give a listen to "The Dio Years" by Black Sabbath. In particular, the song Heaven and Hell sounds to be an excellent recording. Plus a great song on top of that. :-)
Just want to add that there is a MVI release of this disc. It comes with an audio CD and a DVD with the music on it. The DVD sounds fantastic.

I also have the gold Master of Puppets disc, and it is the best recording of older (better?) Metallica that you can find.

This might be a funny one, but I always thought that Rammsteins Sehnsucht album had a very clear precise metal sound. The only problem is I have no idea what he is saying. Sounds great on my 80's
