Getting a big ole Canadian clipper in Iowa today. Most of northern Iowa is under a blizzard warning. Where I'm at in Des Moines in Central Iowa, we have 2 degrees with 60 mph winds which computes to -28 with the wind chill. In addition, with all the ice rain we got last night, our interstates and highways are like playing ice hockey, just dodge the semis.

Yeah. Gettin' hammered here in Cleveland, too. Seems to be a pretty big storm. We're expecting 5 to 9 inches by this evening with another 1 to 4, lake effect, overnight. Whopee!

I've been trying to unfreeze some pipes for the last two hours. I haven't said a word on this thread yet, because the averaged -17 degrees we've hit overnights don't seem like an issue at all considering what some of you are dealing with!

It just started snowing here. By tomorrow morning, we might see 18". I may commit suicide. Oh wait - I live in Rochester, suicide is redundant.

So this equates to a typical winter day in Rochester?

Not typical, really. We average about 100" of snow per year. We usually get a few days of sub-zero temps. A typical winter day (DEC, JAN, FEB) is around 20-25 degrees, almost always cloudy and most days, some snow falls (flurries to an inch or two). We get really hammered 4-5 times per year by snow. The real issue is the length of the winter Starts about Nov 1st and hangs on til the end of March. 4-6 weeks too long. I like seasonal chnages, but it seems like out seasons here are June, July , August and winter.

Our first big blizzard of the season is coming today in NYC; plus the temp is supposed to drop into negative territory, not counting windchill from the supposedly gusty 50 mph winds. This wouldn't bother me but for the fact we're hosting a party tonight... and I'm beginning to wonder if anyone will come. I wouldn't blame anyone if they didn't!

I wouldn't wish frozen pipes on anyone. Would rather live with the frozen fingers and feet I have now.
Good luck with the pipes. Remember, the best way to avoid frozen pipes is to stop fixing those tap washers when they leak. "Drip, drip, drip" keeps the pipes thawed

Yup, first big one here started a couple of hours ago. We are expecting 12-18". They claim there will be near white out conditions sometime between 3-8PM. I have never seen a white out in this area (or at all for that matter) so I'll believe that one when I see it.
