My M3s arrived at the sort facility at our airport this morning -- Yeah-ahh!!! Unfortunately it was Saturday ....

My wife nixed the Full Metal Brackets I ordered with my speakers. ("You don't see those on HGTV" ??!??)

I have some unused stands. Wood Technology 24" high. 11x11 bottom base 6.5x6.5 top base.

Best place for these speakers in the family room is on a brick ledge that runs the length of the room. Ledge is 11.5" wide and about 4" high. Because this means the stands have to be square (parallel) to the ledge, my main question is whether it's OK to sit the M3s diagonally on the top of the stand (they'll have to be toed-in a little in this room.

I've already noticed that the Axiom stands are too big for the ledge. Optimum (besides the brackets of course) may be a stand that would fit on the ledge but have a swivel top. I haven't found anything like that though.

Anybody know of any alternatives?

I think toeing in the speakers while the stands are square to the ledge should be no problem at all. Remember the Axiom speakers aren't exactly square anyways

Only thought is that depending on the size & shape of the room you might find having the M3s so close to the wall gives you a bit too much mid-bass. In that case you might want to move the stands out to sit on the floor instead of on the ledge... try 'em both ways and see which sounds best. Then put them back on the ledge so they look best ;(

Room is 15x20. M3s will be on the long wall. There's a 10x6.5 foot opening at the back of the room (into DR), pretty much in line with speaker placement. And an 8x6.5 foot opening into LR on the left (when facing speakers).

I'll have to check that out. Wouldn't that be similar distance to having them on FM Brackets?

Yes, I think the distance to wall with the stands on the ledge would be about the same as with FMBs -- far enough away from the wall that the rear port will be able to breathe OK, just not necessarily the optimal distance in all respects.

Given the size and shape of your room, I don't *think* you're going to have a problem anyways... and you're definitely better off with stands since you will have the ability to experiment with placement.

I think that's going to be a pretty good setup. I'm guessing the couch or chairs directly in front of the speakers will be pulled a few feet from the back wall so you can walk into the DR. If so, the M3s should be "big enough". I would be willing to bet money that you will end up with the stands on the floor, not the ledge, though... you just have to do something nice to make up for the lower WAF

If you find that the M3s sound better when the stands are pulled out a foot or so from the wall you will want to leave them there and not put them back on the ledge, right ? That will probably make your wife unhappy, which indirectly will make you unhappy.

You need to do something sufficiently nice for your wife that she doesn't mind you putting your speakers "right in the middle of the floor"

Whoops, sorry. We should probably put "Wife Approval Factor (WAF)" in the FAQ
