I like this idea very, very much. I love being turned on to new music, so I'll jump in, too. But I think reciprocation is key. I'll be sending a mix to BigWill, and if anyone else would like a copy, just send me one of yours. PM me for details.

man, i'm surprised nobody's come up with this before. it's be a great idea; plus you could also do CD's with local bands, or mix it in with the faves.

Yeah, please refrain from reciprocating with crappy music.
Thanks to everybody for expressing interest.
I'm having a hard time narrowing down my collection of faves to just one disc. I think the classical is going to get largely axed, as most of my faves are pretty long (sorry JohnK). I also decided not to include stuff that EVERYBODY has heard, but which is still very cool (The Who, Floyd, etc...).
And the first installment may be a little late being delivered - response has been overwhelming. I didn't realize there were so many polka fans out there!

There'll definately be a track from them on there.
When I'm done, we can swap discs. I find a lot of new music I like from people who stop by to demo the axioms. It'll be cool to hear what some fellow Axiomites like to listen to.

Alright...the mix is done. Anyone who wants a copy just pm me. It's a pretty diverse mix, and I tried to shy away from the stuff you've likely ever heard on the radio. It was pretty hard to keep the track list down to a managable size...something that would fit on one disc.

Well, I'd offer a disc, but I might as well just make one and give it to Sid.
I definately don't have the same tastes as the classical, blues, c*ck rock and arena rock fans around here.

So Bigwill...should we let people know the playlist here on the boards or just send the list with the disc?

Sounds like a good plan. I'll post the track list of my disc tonight. I'm curious to know how many cd purchases our mix exchange creates.

That's why I'm curious about the resulting cd purchases. What the RIAA doesn't understand is that a tremendous amount of cd sales are the direct result of mp3 downloads and cd trades. I'd say nearly 50%+ of the cd's I've purchased in the past 2-3 years are due to the fact that I heard a cool mp3, or someone burned a few cool tracks for me. The reason they're losing money is because they're promoting CRAP music.
<end rant>

OK. I just finished "pmbuko's AxFoMix #1" and I'm burning two copies to be ready to send out in reciprocity for the two mixes I have incoming. (I'm assuming the incoming mixes will have return addresses on them??)
I will also send a copy to anyone who PM's me their address. I'll respond to your PM with a complete track/artist/album listing.

Hey, hey, hey! Crazy mix, spiff!
There are some real gems on that disc (and a couple that had me scratchin' my head ). I'm gonna have to put some crazy music on mine in order to not appear too staid.

I don't have the 3 PAGES! of liner notes you supplied with me here, but I liked the opening jazz track. Nice recording, nice song, I wish I wasn't in the kitchen when I put the disc in. The Dirty Dozen song is very cool; raucous, sexy stuff that everybody is going to dig.
Then came the techno stuff right? Propellorheads was a great test of my speakers - really showed off the bass. I liked the song quite a bit, but it and some of the other "sounds like the disc is stuck" songs had the wife a little edgy. I did feel like I was at a rave. The baby was pretty dumbfounded.
Kristine W (?) can certainly sing and that was a nice quality recording, too.
I don't care for Sting too much, sorry.
The last song - the Moby track with the incredibly long title - was very pretty, lush, complex. It reminded me of DeBussey, but with modern electronic instruments and a repetitive line. Impressionist music, right?
I liked it, truly. Thanks for the time and obvious care and thought in putting it together. I'm going to give it a more thorough listening, from the sweet spot, ASAP.

i was just gonna let y'all know that the discs i am sending are not going to be the quality of recordings to 'test' your system.. i thought the original idea was to make a cd of music that i like, not necessarily that sounds great. i hope y'all arent disappointed. the stuff i am sending out has a definite country vibe, but its Texas country, so its different, at least to me it is. the main thing to focus on in the songs is the writing, and how the words make you feel. its more about the attitude.
i will feel stupid if i make something up, and then you just toss it in the trash. but, that is a distinct possibility, so just keep an open mind.

I tried to pick songs which I both liked, and were good samples to really enjoy what great speakers we all have.
I had a blast putting it together, and will work on making a V.2 soon!

Not sure if you have a PC Club near you, but they tend to have some pretty good deals. Roger builds them from scratch, so our last three have all come from parts that we bought from PC Club...though they have pre-built systems as well.

Guys, I want very much to get in on this deal, but I've got the Pinewood Derby this weekend and lots of other stuff going on, so it will take me a few weeks at best to reciprocate. When you're in burning mode, if it is convenient to make a copy for me, that would be great. Like Ken, though, I'm afraid that I may not be able to expand your horizons much.

Are you using name brand CDs? That should improve reliability. I'd also slow down the speed a notch or two. If you keep burning coasters, well, the new drive is probably a good idea. You can get 'em real cheap from ZipZoomFly or NewEgg (both reputable online dealers).

Looking forward to it!
btw...listened to my mix in the car yesterday. Did I mention you should play the Propellerheads song REALLY loud? You've also got to be in the right mood to listen to it. If you're feeling mellow, that's not the right time to listen.

Oh, and I had to leave some songs off the disc that I really wanted to include. Stuff by Handel, Rachmaninov, Nat King Cole, SRV with his brother, a whole bunch of reggae that probably nobody would like anyways, Loreena McKennit, John Hiatt, Dick Dale and some other surf music guys. Hopefully all the songs will fit on one disc, otherwise Long Beach Dub All0Stars will get cut, too.

spiffnme, I had the chance to listen to your mix the other day. The Charlie Haden track is awesome, and the DDBB track is a great foot stomper. (Is that an official category -- foot-stomping music? ) The electronic music took me more than one listen to get into, though. The Hybrid tracks have some pretty cool texture. The Propellerheads will take me still longer to appreciate, I think. It's so long that I find myself wanting to fast forward parts of it -- especially repetitive parts. However, if I had a speedy convertible and a relatively uncrowded freeway ahead of me, I could envision myself blasting it and tearing up the asphalt. Is that what you meant by non-mellow mood?
Now on to Orbital. The intense, driving drum'n'bass line builds up a tension and suspense that, unfortunately never gets released. Talk about blue ears....
I have to admit I don't care at all for the dissonant synthesizer chords in the Christine W song, but her voice is amazingly soulful.
The Groove Armada track is my favorite of the electronic tracks. I can't quite put my finger on why. I probably has something to do with the mellowness and its use of real instrument samples. Nice interweaving loops in this one.
The Beethoven needs no critique.
Dead Can Dance. She sounds possessed!! But that's not a bad thing. A lot of great texture here, too, but the slight pitch bends in the horn are inexplicable.
Sting. This one is not listed in your included literature. I haven't heard this version of his song. What album is it from?
Superior. I liked it, but I can't give you specifics because I couldn't rip it to my iPod (which I brought with me to Dallas).
Moby. Shimmery. Calming. Reflective. Kinda like water. I like.

hmmm, i've been kind of absent from the forum over the past couple of weeks (we're out of the deep-freeze here so I've been enjoying our last 2 weeks of summer )
This is a great idea, I'm going to have to get on this. Problem is the compooter crashed and we need to install a new power supply!?!
Any of you southern neighbours concerned about international shipping? I'm more than happy to return the favour when the 'pooter is up and runnin' again.
Hey Bren, i'd love a copy of your faves by the way (if you were up to burning one).

I received Peter's disc today and Craig's a couple of days ago.
Peter, I haven't had a chance to listen to your disc yet, but Thank You! I'm looking forward to it!
Craig, excellent music! I'll write more when I've listened to the discs more, but I'm already anticipating some new music purchases based upon hat you sent!
Question for either/both of you: Where did you find the artist info? It seems more "organized" than the type of stuff I normally see on Amazon....??

Mark,
Most of the reviews in my track notes came from Amazon's editorial reviews. The ones I couldn't find on Amazon I located with Google. Next time, I'll include my sources in print.

I gathered my notes from artistdirect.com. They had nice bios on just about everybody. Informative without reaching the realm of TMI.
Got your disc yesterday Peter, but haven't had a chance to give it a listen yet.

Sure, PM me your address... same goes for anyone with a more, er... punk-flavoured ear. (Ray, even though that Jerry Lee Lewis played the piano with his feet, I'm thinking more Bad Religion and the Subhumans here!)

BigWill...
See the Wikipedia definition here.
The ultimate cock rock song is "Big Balls" by AC/DC... the innuendo, double entendres and chauvenism... it's the poster boy for it.
I also stretch it to include the hair metal bands where the guys have 3 lbs of product in their hair, tight pink spandex, leather "gay bar" hats, makeup (and not KISS/Misfits style Halloween makeup... like Mary Kay stuff!) and yet they swagger like they're the ultimate in machismo (or ma-cheese-mo)... see Motley Crue, Poison, Whitesnake. Some bands that deserve the title but I just can't pin it on them... like Skid Row (Slave to the Grind did a lot to help that) and G'n'R (who I don't really care for, but I respect).

Sid - here's what's coming at you... since I've got a soft spot in my heart for punk covers, you've never expect, the second half of the CD is all covers of songs you wouldn't expect to be covered. (and a lot of CanCon - CANadian CONtent for the rest of you!)
Track Listing:
Bootsauce - Whatcha Need (from Montreal - one of the songs I use to test speakers - has some very deep analog low frequency content)

Got your CD this morning, Mark, and I was home and actually got a chance to listen to some of it (since my kid is sick with the stomach flu). I like what I've heard so far. (And if it means anything, my wife prefers this disc to spiff's.)

I listened to the rest of the tracks in the car to and from work this afternoon. Unfortunately, I still don't like David Sanborn.
Some stand-out tracks are #12, Devil in a Woodpile -- awesome -- and #18, Long Beach Sub All-Stars -- I had never heard of them before, but Chali 2na's voice (of Jurassic 5) is unmistakable. That track is great.

Ash - send me a PM with your address.
Sorry I haven't sent any of these out yet. Had a hard drive crap out on Sunday on the system with the burners. Why don't I have them on all the computers? Good question - not like the old days of "wait, don't start Calculator - I'm burning a CD... Argh! Coaster!"

I don't know much about any of the artists, but I do know that the Long Beach Dub All-Stars are the remaining members of Sublime with various guests.
I think Devil in a Woodpile hails from Chicago, but I'm not sure. Most of the disc they use a tuba for bass. The song you heard they used a string bass, I think.
Sorry about the Sanborn tune. It seemed to stick out like a sore thumb when I listened to the mix, too. Just lacks soul. All style, no heart. The drums sure sound good on M60s, though.

Hey, I'm just trying to set a good example about feedback. The only response about my mix so far -- cough Mark cough Craig -- has come from a newbie. He likes it.

I've just heard the first couple tracks of your cd today Peter. Work has been hell, and then I've been playing tennis at night. When I get home I eat dinner and crash.
When I first put the disc in, and that first tune started...the one about the shoes...I thought "what the hell is this?"...then about halfway through the song, I was really diggin' it.

When I saw your address, I noticed how close to UCLA you live. It's a shame I'm not being sent to UCLA this time for work.
I know what you mean about being busy. I hate not having enough time to do what I want. But, at least you're getting tennis in (which I assume you want to do).

Sorry, Peter. There are times when I'm doing lots of "graphics work" (Read: No Audio) and can listen to music for extended periods while I work. Then, there are times as I've had lately, where I just haven't had a chance to listen to ANY music.
Along the same lines, I got Mark's CD yesterday and haven't taken it out of the bubble wrap yet.
It's not that I'm unappreciative; quite the opposite. I want to listen when I can really listen and not half a track at a time between phone calls or while I'm rolling my chair around the room multitasking on four computers!

No worries. I was mostly feigning impatience. I can wait. Really, no problem. Waiting is something I do all the time...
OK, now have you listened to the CD????

bigwill, I dropped your CD in the mail this afternoon, complete with a buttload of notes. Your packaging inspired me and I did shipped mine the same way.

Mike, got your mix today. I copied it to my iPod and plan on listening to it as I fall asleep tonight. Gotta squeeze the music time in somehow. I'll give it a proper run on my Axioms soon.

And I got yours yesterday, pmb, thank you very much. I listened to the whole thing from the sweet spot with a big glass o' beer in hand.
The wife preferred it immensely to spiffs CD (and my own "agro" music). She always likes the folksy singer-songwriter stuff. I most liked the Mother Hips, Bela Fleck and MMW (?) tunes.
Spiff, please don't be insulted by the above statement - my sister-in-law was over Saturday night and really, really dug your CD (except that one song by the big-voiced girl). OTOH, she was pretty sh1t-faced!

with the cd's I've been receiving there is definately a strong folksy/guitar driven theme to most of them. I picked some of the more mellow stuff that I listen to, and compared to three discs I've received, my disc was on speed.
I'm currently working on a Spiffnme Mix v.2. More jazz, less electronica (though there are a couple tracks). I'll post a track listing soon.
Thanks everyone for the discs. This have been great fun!

I admit I've been on an acoustic/folksy bent for quite some time now, leaving the likes of Tool, Metallica, and Alice in Chains by the wayside. I still like to mix it up though.
The mix I assembled wasn't so much "my favorite songs" as a compilation of songs I thought would appeal even to an audience that doesn't regularly listen to the "lighter side of eclectic".
I'm glad the wine improved your taste in music, Mark.

Bren,
I borrowed/stole this CD from Ken's house (he's on vacations) a few days ago and have had it in my car since. I just looked at the track listing today, but I can tell you that I like at least half the stuff on there. There's only a couple that I skip regularly -- I don't recall which, though.
This is very WHITE music.

not that's there's anything wrong with that! that's alright, i'm gonna make a disc skewed to the Celtic side, and you don't get much whiter than that. now i've just gotta get the playlist down to fit on a disc!

I figured it was a given that I didn't have any problem with it being White. It's not "white or die" music. It's just white.

well on this very topic, i will request some assistance from my fellow axiomites...(Peter, I normally pose this type of question to your brother and he is always quite helpful, but he's on holidays now correct???).
I pretty much have the list pared down for a cd of my own, so what i need to know is what is the best way to get the songs coverted to files and burnt to a cd? I have Nero on the PC, but that is burning software only, no? What is the best way to convert the original songs to MP3 (or whatever is best) at a decent bit rate? If i require something different where would i find the software? As you can see, I'm essentailly hopeless with this kind of thing. I was hoping someone might be able to help me out.
thanks in advance everyone
Scott

sid-what i've done is used Windows Media Player to record all of my cds to my hard drive at whatever the "lossless" bit rate is for a WMA file (varies by track) and just added the files to the "burn list". under the "burn" tab, i can rearrange order of the tracks as i see fit and it'll tell me which files won't fit on the disc. plus it does all the converting back to an audio track file when burning so it's not an mp3/wma/whatever and can play on any player. now i'm sure that by virtue of the fact that i'm using "cd quality" bit rates i'm limiting the number of tracks on the disc, but i figure it's better to have fewer, better sounding songs than more, crappy sounding ones.
