So after a year of distractions... I'm back on audio and here is my " wall o' sound" .. hard to believe but the wides and heights make an incredible....incredible difference even at these small difference in spacing and out of the placement specs I also have QS8s at sides and rears and an EP500.. a lot of drivers and output for an 11 x 11 room!

Im a happy man.... now on to the painting, carpet, furniture, etc Should be done in a few weeks!

5.1 and 7.1 I get but what are all the speakers for? Do some share channels or do they all have their own?

So confused..I only use 2 speakers at a time.

On blu-ray discs there can actually be up to 8 channels (7 plus sub) of discrete content. So yeah, they can be each their own.

Additionally, Prologic and NEO:6 can extract the ambient information captured in a stereo recording and expand it to multiple channels for a recreation of a larger sound stage.

I never restrict myself to only two speakers.

I usually only use my right surround and my center at any given time, although sometimes I'll change it up for the left front and the sub.

The AVR I just got has Audyssey DSX and Dolby
height. Both use information from the 5.1 soundtrack to provide "location" information for the Heights and/or wides. I didn't think it would sound that good or make much of a difference but it does for me.

I really like it.

The AVR is 9.2 so right now I'm using H&Ws plus side surounds (thru my back speakers). Actual sides are on a break.

I didn't know they had receivers that did that.

Any particular movie scenes stand out so far?

A lot of Avatar! (But I haven't watched a whole lot yet). Only had them set up and calibrated since Sunday.

I believe more of the affordable Denon's in the coming year will have DSX as well.

My Onkyo 5508 is 9.2 as well.
