Sad, but not all that surprising.

Trauma is the number 3 killer in the U.S. behind cardiovascular disease and cancer. It is the number 1 killer of people under 45. It costs us more years of life than cardiovascular disease and cancer combined. It costs more money than either cardiovascular disease or cancer. Yet, it receives less than 1% of the research funding of either cardiovascular disease or cancer because we view it as "accidents" or "acts of God" when in fact the majority of the "accidents" are easily preventable. Most of these tragedies could be easily avoided.

I'll get off my soapbox now and just say that I feel for their friends and families.
