The downloader is handy IMHO... it runs a script once downloaded that automatically copies the music to your default location as specified in iTunes (or WMP if you use that). It then also ensures that the music is added to the appropriate library once downloaded and put in the right directory.

Nothing shady going on there, just a genuinely handy little feature.
