That's something I always wanted to do; create MPEG test patterns by hand coding the datastream. But it is as much works as it sounds. I started writing a custom MPEG2 encoder to help me, but even that was a ton of work.

Then H.264 comes along and its even hard to code. I'm glad someone took the immense effort to produce this disc. I'm always bugged by patterns that contain compression artifacts, it's hard to judge the transition from below-black to black when there's a swarm of mosquitoes hovering right at the point you're trying to see.
