To put it bluntly, the guy wasn't very bright. I have known a few friends that have gotten "scary letters" in the mail after downloading something they shouldn't have. You're stupid to continue after that, at least in the same way.

If you're going to participate in obtaining illegal material, do so while using more than half your brain, otherwise you are insulting your own intelligence. Kazaa, AudioGalaxy, and others are programs that are asking for trouble because of their easy access.
