I have the same thing with my Denon with my Axioms. On the volume control that is rated at -80 to +15 I start to get sound at around -40 and increase it from there. I have this setting programmed, so when it turns on I don't have to increase the volume control so much each time I play music, watch movies etc.. Mostly this has to do with the sensitivity of the speakers. There was nothing defective with the receiver btw.
