If the main consideration is to be performance rather than appearance, two subs should be located, as Dean mentions, so as to minimize the effects of room modes which cause uneven bass. There are fairly lengthy papers discussing this, but the short version is that they should be located either at the midpoints of opposite walls or in diagonally opposite corners.
