IMO you do sacrifice sound quality with in walls because it limit’s how you can place the speakers both for bass response and more important for imaging. IMO a big advantage of using bookshelf speakers with a good subwoofer is that it let’s you place each type of speaker for it’s best performance. Using on/in wall speakers inherently limits you to wall mounting which has a profound effect on how the speakers perform (good or bad).

IMO free standing speakers are better for tweaking or re-tasking later as you build your system, but ultimately it depends on how you plan to grow you your system.
