J., I hate to break it to you, but it's not just that they're compressed, it's that most of the sound effects are just that, effects! If you hear someone punch someone else, it's probably someone hitting a steak with a mic close up next to it. I would wager that explosions are all done digitally now, and that Mustang engine probably wasn't real either.
