Whip, I strongly lean toward favoring the two smaller subs if economics don't allow for the two bigger ones. Two widely separated subs do provide a 3dB higher volume and when correctly placed(basically, at the mid-points of either the side walls or the front and back wall, or in diagonally opposite corners)significantly smooth the bass response by reducing the effect of room modes.
