The "presence" speakers are a feature of the Yamaha 1400 and 2400 receivers. The presence speakers are supposed to be smaller, direct-radiating speakers that mount above and behind the main front speakers. As their name indicates, they are supposed to give a little more "presence" to the front soundstage. I've never heard this for myself. I don't own any Yamaha receivers but I've read about these presence channels. They are lower wattage channels that are matrixed from the L&R front channels, I believe.

One disadvantage of using the 2 presence channels is you can't drive a set of back 6th and 7th speakers AND use the presence channels at the same time. The current Yamahas can't drive all speakers in this 9.1 setup at the same time. Maybe the new RX-Z9 will have this capability.
