For a July 2007 Prom the BBC Philharmonic featured the popular work for piano and orchestra by Rachmaninoff, "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini"in the first half. Following that the massive and very colorful Gliere 3rd Symphony, "Ilya Muromets" musically told the story from Russian folklore of Ilya, a crippled peasant's son who was visited by heavenly messengers who give him superhuman powers to become a great hero by defeating the invading pagan hoards. The music depicts his military and romantic exploits. including defeating entire armies with just a handful of companions.
