Hi Jeff.

First, the key point - upgrades are ALWAYS required . The 910 is a nice entry level unit and moving up the line will pay audio and video benefits for you.

I was in the same quandry a couple of months ago. I was looking at 2910 vs. 3910. Then I started to do some research over at the AVS Forum "DVD Players" and a few other places. This brought the 2900 up on my radar screen.

I'll just give you some snippets here, and urge you to go over the AVS and do a bit of research, searching on the 2900 and 2910. I chose the 2900 (and am extremely pleased) for the following reasons:
1) The 2900 uses the Silicon Image chip vs. the 2910 Faroujda chip. The SI chip is better for film based material (film-like smoothness, colors jump out, 3D like). Faroujda is a bit too sharp. Also, side by side, my eyes told me the 2900 picture was better than the 2910.

2) The audio DACS in the 2900 are much better than the 2910 and almost equal the 3910.

3) The 2910 is built like a tank, the 2910 is like a jeep. Roughly, he 2910 equates to the 2200 and the 3910 equates to the 2900.

4) The 2900 is a $1,000 MSRP. Crutchfield had (and still has) the 2900 reduced to $699. About the same price as the 2910, but a better unit. Also, Crutchfiel has an outlet store (that's where I got mine) and a scratch & dent store. If you ar epatient, you can save another $75 - $125 looking there.

Don't get me wrong. The 2910 is a good unit. User reviews support that. I just want to make you aware of the 2900 and the great opportunity it presents right now.
