the setting on my speakers states campatiable with recivers rated 8 ohms or less, thank you for the info
johnk and sirquack i will keep my yamaha reciver model RX-V450 set on 8 ohms .I've got a panasonic dvd player model DVD-F87 and it only has multi channel hook ups and it has coaxial digital on this years modle and no fiber optic audio available where as the last years model did!. i don't know if i like that ,should i be running multi channel or digital coaxial??I've never used it before and don't quite understand the difference, will i get better sound and the same surround effect with digital coaxial as i would with the deticated channels of multi connection ? once again thank you for you help and quick responce.

Benson, if you want to watch dvd movies that are encoded with dd/dts 5.1 you'll need to hook up your coaxial cable from your dvd player to your receiver. That way you'll get surround sound thru your speakers.

The multichannel hookups are for dvd-audio/sacd discs. If you are planning on using this then you'll need 6 regular rca cables that interconnect from the dvd player to the multichannel inputs on the back of your receiver.

Michael is right, you want to use the coax for digital sound to your receiver. The receiver will decode the various surround formats. The multi hookup jacks are for SACD (super audio)and DVD-A, but you have to buy a CD or DVD that is compatible to get 5.1 or higher for those items. I believe some of the newer receivers coming out have the HDMI cable, that I believe can replace all the cable options for multichannel inputs.
