Ok guys you may remember my thread about the AVR635. I bought it but I can return it for the AVR7300.

1. Im concerned about clipping with the 635 because I listen to music and home theater LOUD.

I have two things im kicking around.

Do I....

Just buy the AVR7300

or

Keep the 635 and run the 4 QS8 surrounds and buy three outlaw monoblocks for the fronts and center.

Which would be best?

Lastly can the 635 share Wattage from the front and center(since they wont be used) for the 4 rears?

I dont know if a reciever can use unused power from other channels or not.

Thanks yet again everyone

What is your definition of loud? Do you own an SPL meter so you can tell us what loud in dB's is to you? The 635 should be able to pound out plenty of Loud music, unless you plan to go deaf

I wish receiver mfgs would start adding clipping indicators to their amps. Used to be so simple -- take the output from the amp, scale it down with resistors, compare it to the amplifier input, and start firing LEDs if the two signals don't match.

It would be particularly easy to implement now that everything has microprocessors... just a single muxed ADC to digitize the signal coming out of the power amp, and do the rest in firmware. Has anyone seen clipping indicators on anything other than a BHPA (Big Honkin' Power Amp) ?

EDIT -- having said that, the chances of you clipping enough to matter on HT is (in my opinion) pretty much zero. Your ears will give out first. Music is tougher on a receiver than HT because the sub doesn't do so much of the work, and because you get high sustained SPLs. Most amps will put out more power in a short peak than they will continuously (because the power supply voltages don't droop) and the HK can put out enough current that it's doing to do a good job of powering those peaks.

Yes the 7300 will play a tiny bit louder but from what I remember the difference is only a couple of dB, ie barely noticeable. On the other hand, if you don't care about the room EQ then there is no reason not to go with the 7300 and it does seem to have some other nice things eg. video upconversion...

Zach, you continue to be tortured by what are almost certainly only imaginary concerns. Disregard what you read on that other forum from someone who may have developed a paranoid obsession about amplifier power. Stop kicking around either of those ideas, relax, and just enjoy your M80s and 635. No, an unused amp channel doesn't have any power which it can lend to another one which is in use. The power supply section of the amplifier supplies each channel with how much it needs.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

John: while what you say is very true, I have found that the limiting factor, in most receivers, is the power supply, not the individual amplifiers. So, with mono blocks for the fronts and center, unused power supply capability could be available for surround and rear channels if that was actually an issue.

In my opinion, he should get a sound level meter and determine how loud, loud really is. That would probably be the best indicator as to whether he needs any additional capability.

I've been there before Zack, actually I used to hang at AVS a lot, before I found Axiom. I think I have about 700 posts over there, if that matters. Anyway, I heard that Axioms were to bright, harsh, etc... I also was told that when matched with Denon, it will sound to mechanical. Well I have Axioms and Denon, based on the fine folks on this website, as well as Axiom employees recomendations. Some of the AVS'rs could not have been futher from the truth. Oh well, I guess all forums have to have a few trolls to stir the pot, they come by here once in awhile also, but we scare them off back to AVS

Sir: went to your website just to take a look.

That website is quite impressive!

Good Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, I agree with your comments about listening to what is posted on these boards, any boards. You have to be very careful. I have found that it takes a while to determine who is BSing and who isn't. But, after a while, I get a fairly good idea of who knows what. Some, I believe, are very genuine. Some, I believe, have GREAT fun stirring the pot causing trouble.
