my room is 17'x30'. 15'foot of the 30'is kitchen. i paid the house builder to run speaker wire. the front wall is fine but on the back wall they have the wire coming out the wall at the 10' mark. by the way its run for 6.1 which is fine unless i will hear a big diff going to 7.1. my main question is, is the height to high? here is a pic of the front of the room i dont have one of the back wall. its the same as the front wall but with a window.

Surrounds should be a little higher than listening position and to the side. You could use FMS QS stands.

Backs behind and above. Maybe aimed down on full metal brackets.

Scott, welcome. Didn't follow your description. Where are the side surrounds to be, and do you mean that there's one spot all the way back in the kitchen for a 6th speaker?

I hope this is a better pic. They are putting the wires out right above where the brown curtains are and one right above the middle window. That one I was gonna leave above the window, and the other 2 I was gonna move down towards the sides of the windows, if you guys feel I will get better sound that way. I could go with the stands but since I paid for this I might as well utilize it. THANKS

Okay Scott, I think I follow now. The listening area will be the couch shown in the second picture. Yes, move the outside two wires down to about 7' and try to have them separated as widely as possible, since these are actually your "side surrounds" even though they'll be on the back wall. As to the sixth wire, above the window, it isn't likely that a "back surround" speaker there will be very effective. It would be about on the same plane as the other two surrounds and you wouldn't be sitting very far in front of it, so you wouldn't really get much added "back" effect. It might be better to just stay with 5.1.

Hi Scott,

Nice room by the way It appears you do have some room to pull the couch out, and you probably could then go with a 6.1 setup. Normally, you do want the rear to be behind you a bit, not right above your head. What are you planning for a TV? This seems to be a prime situation for a Front Projection environment. You could mount a screen, or use a painted screen option above the fireplace where the big picture resides. Of course you would have to have them run some cables down from the ceiling, but if there is access I can vision a projector mounted near the rear of the room somewhere. Where is the Audio equipment going to reside?

well i was thinking a plasma as i will be watching more tv than anything. also those windows are gonna be letting in alot of light. the tv will go over fireplace as i paid to have it preplumbed for the all the wires to go through the wall to where the media niche is in the pic. thats where all my elecronics are going as well. im gonna have a cabinet guy build a sweet setup for all the stuff including dvds and cds. ill definitely get picks up of this when its done.

Just be careful, I've heard Plasmas's run hot by nature, and not sure the heat from the fireplace would be a good thing. My folks took the LCD route and bought a Aquos (Sanyo I believe). Anyway, they also have it above their gas log fireplace, and so far no problem, but the mantle does get very hot when it is used...

You can watch tv on a front projection, however, I plan to included a smaller flat screen tv, probably LCD, in the event I don't want to watch the local news at 120" diag
