What's your ultimate transition song between work and weekend? You know, when you come home on a Friday night and your s/o is still not there, and you crank up your Axioms for all they're worth and do your best Tom-Cruise-Risky-Business impression?

I don't know about a weekend kickoff song, but along similar lines I do believe that there are some songs that just make you drive faster.
Officer: Did you know you were doing 85mph in a 55 zone???
Mike: Officer, I'm sorry. I had "Detroit Rock City" turned up. I don't know what happened.
Officer: "Detroit Rock City?" (hearty, good-natured laughter follows...) Well, that explains everything! I'm not even going to bother writing you a warning. It's perfectly understandable. Just watch your speed, okay? Maybe you could put in some Nick Drake or something like that...

So cliché--and I know everyone around here hates them--but Metallica-either Enter Sandman from the Black Album or Until it Sleeps from S&M.

If left to myself in the mornings, it's gotta be(generally) late Baroque into classical, or Verdi, or Puccini.(Seriously, my Fathers' family is from Lucca; Puccini I grew up with-it grows on you)
Later in the afternoon it's usually light Jazz or(God help me)Country.(OK, me Mum was a real hillbilly; She countered Opera with Opery-more specifically Bluegrass) Hey: Loud Country can be fun too
In the evening after about 7:00; whatever, yes, very loud Rock sounds "Right" for the moment! And I crank it so the Kids often leave the house!! Can't be specific cause it varies with the mood

Bob Seger - Roll me Away - now that one gets my weekend kicked off right every time.

Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
Almost ANY Beach Boys song, but especially Good Vibrations.
Ain't too proud to Beg - Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell
If I'd rather be colling down than cranking up, almost anything by Diana Krall.
And Amie, (meant in the most complimentary way) the thought of you doing a Tom-Cruise-Risky-Business impression, is............................................well.............................................heart stopping! And at my age, that is, indeed, "risky business."

Weezer, The Good Life. 'Nuff Said.
When I look in the mirror, I can't believe what I see
Tell me, who's that funky dude, staring back at me?
Broken, beaten down can't even get around
Without an old-man cane, I fall and hit the ground
Shivering in the cold, I'm bitter and alone
Excuse the bitchin', I shouldn't complain
I should have no feeling, 'cuz feeling is pain
As everything I need, is denied me
And everything i want, is taken away from me
But who do I got to blame? Nobody but me
…And I don't wanna be an old man anymore
It's been a year or two since I was out on the floor
Shakin' booty, makin' sweet love all the night
It's time I got back to the Good Life
It's time i got back, it's time i got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I wanna go back…Yeah!
Screw this crap, I've had it! I ain't no Mr. Cool
I'm a pig, I'm a dog, so 'scuse me if I drool
I ain't gonna hurt nobody, ain't gonna 'cause a scene
I just need to admit that I want sugar in my tea
Hear me? Hear me? I want sugar in my tea!
I want to go back, I want to go back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
It's time i got back, it's time i got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I want to go back…Yeah!
…And I don't wanna be an old man anymore
It's been a year or two since I was out on the floor
Shakin' booty, makin' sweet love all the night

I forgot about that song until I got to the chorus...then the tune popped into my head. I'm still not sure what the verses should sound like though. It's been a while since I heard that one. Kinda like when Oasis Wonderwall came on the radio today....hadn't heard that in many years.

How about Katrina & the Waves, 'Walking On Sunshine' going out to all of my south Florida neighbors who ducked and dodged hurricane Katrina the past couple of days.
Whoa, did I actually say 'Katrina & the Waves'? Yikes!!

I started off the weekend with Majek Fashek's So Long. But Katrina is now threatening to put me farther below sea level than I already am, and I now feel compelled to listen to as much as I can before my Flood Zone A home becomes part of Lake Pontchartrain.

Thanks for this thread!
I am sitting at home - can't go to work, I somehow got pinkeye, so I'm home but not sick.
The wife is at work, the boy is at his grandparents.
I realize that this is the first time in 5 months since the birth of the boy, that I have had a day to listen to music by myself.
Thus for quick reference I am playing Rush's Greatest Hits (thanks Sir Quack!) and will proceed to more ear-splitting loud music.
Weekend Kickoff songs:
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who - I defy you to find a better definition of "rock music" The second scream near the end where Roger Daltry's vocal chords are shattered just gets me psyched up and moving.
Sweet Home Alabama - I'm not from Alabama, nor am I particularily a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, but the sentiment "Turn it up" right after the opening guitar intro, is the right sentiment for listening to good tunage
I third Working for the weekend
Take it easy - Eagles
Lighter fare:
"Playing with My friends" - BB King and Robert Cray
"jammin" - Bob Marley

Wow, too many to choose from, I usually don't have a specific song. I'm often cycling through too many new cds so normally it is a newer one that gets cranked up.
If i had to pick, i'd probably say one of the following:
Train in Vain - the Clash (or anything by them)
Song #2 - Blur
Corduroy - Pearl Jam (all pretty much anything by them)
"Chickens don't clap."

I'll see Sid's Train in Vain and raise him Straight To Hell by the Clash.
Also,
Tilted - Sugar
Whiskey in the Jar - any version
any Meat Puppets cover off Unplugged in New York (Plateau, Lake of Fire, Oh Me) - Nirvana
!Paranoia Cha Cha Cha! - Soviettes
Toys - Epoxies
Saturday Night - Misfits
Just a few I've noticed over the last little while.

Do any other Canucks cue up channel 904 on the Bell Satellite? Whiskey in the Jar comes on that channel a lot and it always stops me in my tracks since I only remember singing it at smoky pubs in Ireland, not on the dance floor this side of the pond. Nothing stopped me as hard as Paul Anka's new version of Eye of the Tiger, though - I'm still scarred from that experience.

Bren,
nice call on the Clash and some Nirvana in there too (though I find the originals as enjoyable - many certainly would not! )
Amie,
any idea what channel 904 is on the Bell? I know they've got a Winnipeg station on Expressvu and they essentially have 10 songs on repeat all day - Metallica's Whiskey in the Jar is usually one of them.

My vote goes to the originals as well. Meat Puppets II is a classic. And while I do actually understand that "Whiskey in the Jar" goes back much farther than Thin Lizzy, they get my vote for the definitive version.

904 is the Gold Rock channel. I assumed everything was repeating 10 times a day because of the CBC strike. Is it over yet?

Oops, that's a CBC LOCKOUT... CBC management is currently in the lighter summer schedule, so rather than bargain right now, they lock out their employees until they're really needed for the fall season. This happens every time bargaining comes around, and it's a low blow by management to dump salaries for a few months.

well you oughta check out "Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine" then! they do loungified (real word? ahh whatever) covers of hard rock, 80's, and hip-hop songs. It's almost more like comedy album than a music album but it's really good stuff!

I've heard them...they have some interesting stuff.
NIN - Closer (I want to f- you like an animal song)
Rage Against the Machine - Guerilla Radio
Plenty of others two...those are the two that come to mind off the top of my head.

Well, if we are talking party killers, these would manage quite nicely:
Anything by Air Supply / Anne Murray / Celine Dion
Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
Red Sovine - Teddy Bear
Bob Carlisle - Butterfly Kisses
ABBA - The Winner Takes It All
Clarence Carter - Patches
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Robert John - Sad Eyes
Ronnie Milsap - Smokey Mountain Rain
Shawn

Natalie Merchant's Carnival from her Tiger Lily CD always gets me in the right frame of mind for the weekend. I'm sure this weekend though it will be Tori Amos, as my wife, 4 yr old daughter and I have tickets to see her at the Hobby Center on Saturday.

Hard for me to say since every day is like the weekend for me. Back in the day, though, I remember playing alot of Voodoo and Sorano.

ACDC - You Shook Me All Night Long
Motley Crue - Kickstart My Heart (Good one to listen to on your way to the Motocross track. You are sure to try that double jump that you have no business attempting if you get on the track before the effect wears off)
Cheap Trick - Mighty Wings from the Top Gun Soundtrack. I had a 2004 Mach 1 Mustang and should have received many speeding tickets while this one played. Too bad I had to sell her. Here is a pic. Wah!
I haven't let myself see that image since I sold the car in January. I can't believe I sold that car. I want to cry now.

Mighty Wings - definitely a song with a direct relationship to my right foot when driving! I haven't heard that one in a while - must pull it out!

It's completely geekish (which is OK, I wave my geek flag high) but I play "Ride of the Valkyries" at top volume, windows open, EVERY Friday when I take off. A few of my co-workers even hang around to watch the spectacle on occasion.

Just listened to it for the first time in at least a year and immediately this thread came to mind.
Take it out for a spin this weekend.

Lately it's been "Real Wild Child" by Iggy Pop. Finally located it after hearing it in some movies like "Crocodile Dundee". A local station used to play "Partytown" every Friday at 5PM.
