Probably one of the more difficult surround speaker setup problems Axiomites face, following an effort to pickup the QS series speakers without putting a finger through a driver, is a temporary mount until the ideal location has been found. The creative group here has found a number of solutions which I’ve linked here for reference and as a place for others to contribute their flashes of creativity.

Alan Lofft has the sensible recommendation to use step ladders or helpers, although kcarlile seems to have gotten a bit carried away with the people suggestion in the past. Soup cans seem to have made their debut when Romeo used some Campbell’s soup cans to support his speakers, but bridgman has made the soup can solution infamous… I mean Famous. If cold soup cans aren’t to your taste, Ray3 settled on a permanent variation using rubber plumbing couplers. Twirly22 found a method for the picture hanging crowd and minimized damage by using some wire looped around the QS bracket mounts and heavy duty picture hooks. Then there are those handy souls like Michael A who built entire temporary stands out of lumber.

My contribution is more permanent than a helper and more difficult than the soup cans, but very good for simulating ceiling mount situations. I used an 8’ 2X2 board with a rubber furniture foot screwed on the top. I carefully cut the board to length and installed a height adjustable threaded furniture foot on the bottom. I then screwed the QS speaker T-bracket to the 2X2 at the appropriate height. Finally, I wedged the board vertically between the ceiling and floor by unscrewing the adjustable furniture foot. This has allowed me to listen for days… OK, weeks and starting to look like months, to a particular location. Eventually, I’ll convince myself that I’ve found the right location and actually drill holes in my ceiling for the ceiling mounts.

Jump in you creative problem solvers and provide your solutions to this vexing little problem in home theater setup, and if the long-timers on the board know of other past solutions I didn’t find, enlighten us.

I am quite impressed by the post and the idea!

BTW, I never tried to position the speakers. They just went up. Oops.
