Hi. I am considering purchasing the new Denon AVR-4806. It would be my first serious reciever. Does anyone out there have one of these units? Also, does anyone recommend a different receiver in the same class. I want the HDMI up conversion and the firewire capability. The power is also important to me (130 watts).
I have 2 M60ti's, 2 QS8's, the VP150 and the EP500.
Thanks for your help.

Can't comment on the 4806, but I'm sure it would be awesome.

I know someone that just returned the rx-v 4600 for one. He claimed the 4600 was too bright for him although he might not know how to properly eq either. He loves the 4806 and rightfully so. Very nice receiver. He claims it's a warmer sound then the yamaha and has better bass....but again....eq...eq..eq

newf: that is the first negative comment on the Yahama that I have seen.
With all the controls and settings on these new receivers, I REALLY HAVE TO WONDER HOW A RECEIVER CAN BE TOO BRIGHT???
We had a discussion on another thread on this board about the definition of "bright" a month or so ago. Alan veified that "bright" was origionally used to describe speakers that did not have a flat response.
If the controls are set to "neutral" and the receiver really does meet its THD specifications across its rated frequency spectrum, THEN IT JUST CAN'T BE BRIGHT!!!!!
Sorry????

Maret, I have had this receiver now for nearly two months and really enjoy its functionality. The Audyssey EQ is cool to play with and has nearly always nailed the distance and channel levels every time I've played with it. But in my case, it always boosts the upper frequencies too much for my taste. I now use the manual eq, loosely using Audyssey as a guide. The results have been great that way.
It drives the M80s effortlessly for both music and movies. Can't wait 'till War of the Worlds is released. Paired with the 3910 for movies, its better than seeing them first run. At 140wpc, it has plenty of headroom for my listening levels. It replaced the 3805 as the primary avr driving two zones. Inside, the power performance was not as noticeable as it was outside. In the backyard I have a pair of dual voice coil, 250wpc rock speakers that I thought used to sound great. With the 4806, I now know what I was missing. What a treat!
I don't use the HDMI upconversion for all sources as my Sony uses DVI. But is it nice to know I have it in case I upgrade it in the near future. And as with the 3805, this sucker runs very warm. But, that doesn't change too much when its cranking out the tunes.
I don't think you will be disappointed if you decide to go with it. Hope this little bit of information has helped.

ratpack, considering the price difference of the 4806 and the 4600....I can't imagine why it shouldn't be better.
AS for the bright comment, that is why I mentioned the eq. I am convinced that 80% of the people I read about on forums have no idea what to do with an EQ. And the autosetup programs that adjust the eq for you can be just as bad.
This particular person had studio 100's. The Yamaha can be bright if you start cranking the highs through tone controls and the eq, but that is what is an eq is supposed to do...allow you to have that freedom to change things if you want it. If you don't want it bright...turn it off and leave tone controls on flat. Not rocket science and I'm sure you'll be smart enough to figure that out but I am surprised at how many people on forums are not.

Unfortunately, my friend, price is NOT always indicative of quality and features.
While there is about a factor of 2 in price difference between the 4806 and the 4600, I strongly suspect that you would see little difference unless you were listening at very, very loud levels. Then, maybe a pair of Outlaw 200 watt monoblocks for the fronts would make things equal. And, the total price would still be quite a bit less than the Denon!!!
Just one man's opinion.

point well made, and funny enough, it's the same logic I'm using and plan on using when/if I ever get external amps. Although right now I have no need to. I have never used the 4806 but more or less assumed that it's amp section would be much better over the 4600.
in the end, my yamaha will be a pre, and I'll get some amps. I know I'll cave in and get some rotels, nad's, outlaw's or something.

The Yahama 4600 is the way that I am leaning right now. I'm not sure if I would need some additional amps or not. Neverhappy is very "keen" on this receiver and he is "always" trading for something else.
And, there are the amplifiers that Axiom is "testing." Who knows, they may fill the exact bill?????

Hi. Well I did it, I went out and purchased the Denon AVR-4806. I replaced my Sony STR DE-995. Do I notice a difference? Wow!! It brings tears to my eyes. Excellent!
I am still playing with setting it up. I'm having some trouble with the HDMI monitor out.
I have a HD cable box with a DVI-D out. When I try inputing the DVI-D into the Denon and then connecting the TV with a HDMI to DVI-D cable (HDMI from the Denon, DVI-D to the TV). I get a message from the cable box that the TV does not support HDCP. This is not true because the DVI-D out from the cable box works fine when I plug it directly into the DVI-D input in the TV. The OSD and the DVD player both work fine through the HDMI. Any ideas?
