Hard to say, have you checked all your connections? Have you calibrated your system? What dB levels do you have set for you receiver?
Why are you using PLII? Or are you talking about PLIIx?

It would help if you were to give a little more info on the system you have. Plus how it is set up and if you have calibrated it.

Have you done the calibrating with a spl meter?
What speakers are we talking about here. Are these Axioms?

I've noticed this on things like TV shows, especially where they're broadcast in either stereo or mono. I'm sure distortion exists in the source signal. The PL2 must decide that this distortion is "ambient" sounds and move them to the rear speakers.
Have you tried a true digital (Dolby Digital or DTS) source?

Again, you need to give us more specifics. Is this a HTIB with small cube speakers? Sorry, I'm not a big fan of Sony so may not be able to provide input. I'm still confused on what your trying to tell us?

I have had the same problem with certain shows. Sometimes a different PLII mode will work. Or one of the DTS Neo modes. If not, I just switch to Denon's 5ch/7ch stereo mode!
