Hello All,

I just purchased an Emotiva Amp/Processor combo to power my new Axioms. My current receiver was a left over from an old Sony HTIB. I took advantage of a great deal that was being offered on Emotiva's big amp which was %10 off and offered with the new Ultra Lite processor for $99. I thought $99 for a processor was a good deal.

The problem is the amp will be here this weekend. The pre/pro on the other hand might not be here until March as it’s not yet released. I'm trying to figure out how to use my amp until its buddy arrives. My Sony receiver is so cheap that it doesn't have 5.1/7.1 outputs, so I don't see how I can use it as a temporary processor.

The back of my 400 disc DVD changer has 5.1 outputs (which may be only for SACD???) Can I run these outputs directly to the inputs on the new Emotiva amp? It's my understanding that the DVD player has its own decoding chip for Dolby and DTS. I'll have zero bass management or leveling without a processor, but will this work until it shows up??

Thanks!!

Sorry to say but you will have to wait on the pre/pro before you will be able to use your amp. The connections on the dvd player are for going to the mutichannel inputs of a pre/pro for sacd use.

Those outputs only work for SACD?

If it is a Sony then I'm afraid so. Sony players only support one hi rez format and that is sacd.

I just unplugged the optical cable from the back of the DVD player while my daughter's watching monster's inc. The only remaining connection is a stereo pair of RCA cables from the L&R channels of the 5.1 outputs to my receiver. I still get sound (albiet just two channels and Dolby Prologic) while using only these outputs. This means the 5.1 outputs are not for SACD only as they are currently working with a DVD right?

EDIT: Correction, I don't get pro logic, just the left and right feed of 5.1

Okay, I think I understand now. If I used the 5.1 outputs on the Sony DVD player straight to the amp I would lose not only the previoulsy mentioned sound managment features, but I would also lose volume control. I think that last one is the kicker. Having spent my last penny on this combo, is there anything (I'm trying really hard to be creative!) I can to do to avoid having to just sit and look at my new amp for two months???

Try a pawn shop for a cheap deal with preouts.

Ok, I think I have my act together now.

Would this work until my Emotiva processor shows up?

Adcom GTP-750

This is the cheapest fix I've been able to scour from the web.

I don't know enough about that product to make a comment...but may I suggest placing a WTB ad on the the rocket forum. Someone might have a piece of equipment lying around collecting dust that you might be able to pick up for cheap.
Just a thought. Good luck.

maybe you can by a used or refurb receiver with preouts. it may be more useful when your actuall pre/pro arrives. ie in another room or something

Ebay indeed!

I ended up buying this today for $36

Yamaha RX V692

I think I can use my 5.1 outs on my DVD player to handle the DD decoding, send that to the 5.1 input on the yamaha, and then use the preouts to the emotiva. Probably sounds like junk, but will work until my processor shows up right?

Anyone know if the proscessing on this unit is worth $36????

I don't think it will sound like junk. It will work...but you might not have bass management(crossover control) since your dvd player is doing the decoding. What dvd player do you have?

Edit: Oops... went back and re-read from the beginning and looks like you have a 400 disc changer. Sony perhaps? I assume is doesn't have bass management or any way of setting levels then?

It is a Sony mega changer. It has distance, level, placment, and size controls. It doesn't have bass managment outside of the small/large setting. I don't know what it crosses over at with those two, but hopefully it'll work alright till the UL shows up.

I'm just wondering what the sound quality of this unit will be. I know I spent less than $50 on it, but when it was new it was a whole lot more. Maybe it'll just pass the signal without messing it up too much?

Kaylin, the 692 is going to be used as, essentially, just a volume control, so there's no good reason if it's in good condition that the signal would be "messed up" at all
