Just picked up the latest Cold Play CD.
Can't add it to my music library, or download it to my MP3 player.
Going to try to take it back this afternoon.

What program are you trying to use to rip the CD?
Also, if you are running a windows machine disable autoplay and when inserting the CD into the drive, hold down the shift key.
With those two things and using EAC+LAME for ripping CDs to MP3 I never have trouble.

I have the Coldplay X&Y CD (if that is the one you mean) and had no problems ripping it into the computer. Even with WMP v. 10. So at least all the CD aren't/weren't copy protected.
I twice have had other CD's that were protected. They ripped in with pops and clicks. These were both Sony label discs that I exchanged for another copy and got lucky as they were fine.

dllewel, careful, some Sony CDs installed rootkits on some PCs! The issue was resolved a few months ago, but they are nasty DRM rootkit stuff.
Anyways, the way to get around most CD copy protection is by disabling autoplay on your CD-rom drive. Auto play on CD-ROM drives are of the devil. First of all, that is how Sony installed rootkits on peoples PCs, and some disks initiate copy protection because the auto play can initiate an exe file by simply popping in the disk.

For a while Sony was only releasing copy protected discs in areas other than the US.
I got burned buying two of them. Jane's Addiction's "Strays" and D-A-D's "Scare Yourself" (Danish Import)... so now I look for the Compact Disc logo.
I don't carry originals in my car, due to the possibility of weather damage, damage from the car player, theft, etc... so a CD I can only listen to at home isn't much use to me, whether I like the band or not.

Thanks Dan. Yes, I have Autoplay disabled. Best not to install anything you don't explicitly want. The discs I had problems with were a few years ago, around 2003. I haven't had much trouble recently, but I don't buy as much as I used to.

The only way these asshats are going to learn is if discs are returned when purchased or not purchased at all. Take it back. Of course, maybe we're all pirates if we're not buying anything...

That's the funniest part... if I BUY the CD, I'm penalized by not being able to load it onto an MP3 player or an MP3 disc in my car... it's like they're saying "how dare you BUY this disc?"

I watched the "Blackbeard" movie on tv, but not once did anyone say "asshat."

Arrrr... I think y'arrr all misinterpretarrring me...
They interpret it as piracy, simply when we aren't buying anything, regardless of whether we're, shall we say, taking advantage of certain arrrportunities or not.

The RIAA recently made a statement that converting any CD to mp3 format (etc) is not 'fair use'.
I have some choice words for the RIAA but this is a family forum.

Sorry, my open bracket key does not work on my keyboard, spilled something on it. Nor does my apostrophe key. Someone link it up!

On a PC, simply hold down an ALT key and type 0 0 3 9 on the numpad to get an apostrophe, or 0 0 9 1 to get an open square bracket.
