my new system is finally here, after enjoying my m60's for almost a month, the 150 and the qs8's arrived the other day with my new denon 2807 receiver. there is just one or two or three problems, (i need some help ). no audio when using my dvd player. i'm using a coaxial cable from my dvd player to my receiver and i think i set up the receiver correctly to accept coax#2 but still no audio, could it be that my dvd player is the problem, is there a way to check? analog connectors work. is there something else on the receiver to set up? my other questions is, the bass that is being sent to my new svs 25-30 seems to be delayed, is there an adjustment on the receiver or sub to correct this. maybe i'm to excited for everything to work and missed a step.
thanks to anyone with helpful tips, i'm getting frustrated.

Hang in there, deadline. I don't have a Denon receiver, but I do have a 2900 player, and one thing is for certain--Denon manuals are horrendously difficult to understand. Others will chime in soon enough. You may have to wait until morning, though.

I feel for you. It sucks getting new stuff and not be able to enjoy it right away.

Unless you've got a bad coaxial cable, you probably need to set up your dvd player to send out a dolby digital signal. What dvd player do you have?

I think Richeydog is on to something. You not only have to set up your receiver to for the correct digital input when you select "DVD," but you often have to set up the DVD player to send out the proper "bit stream"? (not sure it that's the right term). Do let us know what player you are using.

Yeh i think that is what u have to do . I know i have an HK an in the set-up i had to have it say Video 1/Analog( for TV) an so forth i have the Denon 2200 i have it to Video 1/Coax ( For DVD/CD ) so u might look in that direction also i think i did that in the Denon properties so hopefully it will point u in the right Direction

Make sure you have coax2 assigned to DVD and check the audio setup on your DVD player for the correct digital input. One thing that might help the sub is if you use the auto setup with the mic to calibrate your distances and levels.

thanks for the suggestion, after not seeing any controls on the dvd player last night i got frustrated. my better half had a suggestion this morning, find the remote, i now have audio. i do have another question or two, am i correct in thinking that you sould only hear dialoge from the center speaker? right now all my speakers are sending out full audio.

On your remote you can select different standard, cinema, music, etc, settings. Toggle through them.

Doug's reply refers to the Dolby ProLogic modes. If I understand your question correctly, when playing a source with Dolby Digital 5.1, or DTS 5.1, the center channel will carry whatever the person who did the audio mix sent to the center channel. Sometimes that will be dialog only, but most often it's everything, dialog, music, sound effects, etc. So having "full audio" in the center channel is perfectly normal.

it's not the audio from the center channel that is of concern, i obviously didn't state my problem correctly. my qs8's and my m60's seem to be receiving the same audio as my center 150. isn't the qs8's suppose to handle the effects only?
did i say before that this is frustrating.

You should be getting different audio signals on all channels, my suggestion is to go through the manual a couple times, run the test tones and use the auto setup.

It sounds like 5 channel stereo. Or it's the source material.

If your calibration gave you separate channel tones then the receiver is fine. Check your output mode.

things are moving along slowly, i finally have the audio separated to the correct speakers, that denon manual is about to go out the window, but that's another story. i've had to raise the volume on the surrounds just to be able to hear anything, but unless there is a good dvd with effects to show off my new surrounds i'm just not impressed. i used armageddon for my test, plenty of effects but not alot coming from my surrounds. is this all i have to look foward to.

Somethings still not right if you have to raise the volume to hear the QS8's, have you used the auto setup with the mic, and when playing a DVD is the source showing as DTS, or Dolby Digital.

Or used manual setup with an spl meter?

It sounds to me like you are still in a 5 channel stereo mode and your receiver is not decoding the Dolby or DTS surround.
Make sure your receiver's mode is set to auto and it will automatically switch to whatever mode the input source is sending your receiver, whether it be DD or DTS.

deadline (may I call you dead? [wink)]. Some thoughts.

1) doesn't sound like you have calibrated your speakers with an SPL meter. The 2807 will be set to "0" for each speaker and the sub until you do that. Once you calibrate, you will be amazed with the improvement.

2) Don't toss the manual. The Denon manuals aren't actually too bad once you learn to focus in on the area you want to work with. Otherwise it's like drinking from a fire hose.

3) Either grab your remote or look on the face of the receiver. There should be a setting called "Auto". If this command is active, it will pick up the audio coming from the input device you have selected. If the red light on the receiver for Auto isn't lit, you will need to send the command for Auto from the remote or push the Auto button on the receiver.

After you get the Auto thing figured out, you can then begin to choose the manner in which you would rather hear the sound by trying different audio modes (PCM, DTS, 5/7 channel, Pure direct stereo, etc.) If things get out of whack simply activate Auto - it is your friend.

Once you deal with the 3 things above, your frustration should dissipate in large part. Then you can start palying with some of the flexibilities of the Denon. It is an excellent receiver.

DL, going over this, it looks like you solved the no audio problem, but as was pointed out, you should be sure that if you're using the coax#2 input that the 2807's digital input menu setting for DVD is coax#2. As to why you'd get the same sound in the surrounds as the center, as was also pointed out, this sounds like 5-channel stereo has been unintentionally turned on, so check that. As to the general level of the surrounds compared to the front speakers, the auto-calibration feature of the 2807 does a good job of setting the levels. If this disappoints you, keep in mind that the surrounds aren't supposed to be continually loud and drawing attention to themselves. At times in movies there may be nothing in the surrounds. At other times there might be just subtle ambience content.

The separate point about a "delay" to the sub wasn't clear. If you mean that the sub doesn't "wake up" when bass material is playing, maybe the voltage output from the 2807 is too low. Try setting the level adjustment on the sub itself lower; the auto-calibration on the 2807 will then increase the voltage output to compensate for this when you re-run the auto calibration. Courage dl, you'll get it.

i was initially in 5 channel stereo and didn't realize that the receiver didn't switch over automatically to dolby digital . i am now in the auto setting, just to get started and things are better.. i actually bought a radio shack meter but was only expecting to use it for fine tuning. ray3 had a good analogy about the denon manual, about drinking from the fire hose and was right about 5-channel stereo. john k. i just thought that i might still be missing something with my setup with my receiver, to little effects are going to my surrounds. thanks to all that are experiencing the real deal, maybe i'll figure it out soon, thanks.

Good luck with your setup, don't hesitate to ask any questions, alot of that own Denons have gone through the same thing. Another thing you may want to try is playing a different DVD to see if the effects change, it may just be that movie.

Here is a thread about movies with good surround effects. See if you have one of these and try it.

thanks for the suggestion, last night i watched king kong and there were alot more effects coming through the surrounds, but i still have my surround volume cranked up twice as loud as the auto setup suggests just to hear them. i'm starting to think that with all the help i'm getting from this board my system will be up and running well in know time. next weeks project is pulling out the radio shack meter and that avia disk i have, any advise.

This sounds more and more like a must. I always check mine even after an auto set-up
