OT - does anyone subscribe to RSS feeds, and if so, which reader do you use?

No replies yet? Maybe I'm not the only one who doesn't know what an RSS feed is.

By the way. This is "The Water Cooler." OT is not only allowed, it's mandatory.

I'd answer this, but the "Who's Online" page, looks like HomeDad's already working on it.

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" -- it's a format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Web, including newspapers, magazines, and blogs.
Sorry I don't use them.

Sorry Bren, you can probably give a better real world answer than my technical reply.

I use them but I use a little program I wrote myself. Firefox has also the ability to subscribe to RSS feeds.

Really Simple Syndication is one flavour of RSS (the such-and-such 2.0 spec)... we've got enough IT guys around here that can give a better explanation than I can though.

I'm avoiding work and posting like I'm trying to boost my posts total.

I have no idea what Peter means, but I don't use 'em.

Maybe I just like checking and rechecking web pages all the time or something.

That's the best part about RSS. You can subscribe to RSS feeds from all your favorite RSS-enabled websites, and then your RSS reader does all the work grabbing updates and letting you know when any of the sites have changed. Usually, an RSS feed contains article titles plus a couple short lines of content for each. Good RSS readers will even pull full content in to save you from browsing to each new item.

Here's some more details about RSS.

Apologies to Amie for the derail...
